Greensburg, the Indiana county seat acclaimed internationally as “the City of Democracy,” opens a week-long observance of its 100th birthday Saturday. To Americans, the city may be - better known for its trees grow- . ing out of the tower on the Courthouse roof, but action of the United States Chamber of Commerce in designating Greensburg as a typical American small city has made the name familiar to many Europeans. A scale model of Greensburg, 44 feet in circumference, was displayed at the 1949 International Congress of the Jaycees in Brussels, and since then the display has traveled widely. President Eisenhower sent chairman W. Forrest McCardle of the Greensburg centennial a telegram of congratulations on the eve of the June 13-20 observance. Eisenhower lauded the Decatur County seat and noted that “located in a rich farming area and ; settled by a people of enterprise and courage, Greensburg has prospered over the years.” As many as 50,000 persons were expected for a parade, and indications were that the city will be crowded throughout the week. The observanceof the date in which Greensburg received its charter as a city opens Saturday with an old car parade and a i queen contest, with Indiana Secretary of State John Walsh to crown the winning beauty. Governor Handley is to speak Monday prior to the first presentation of a pageant based on [Greensburg history, with a 400member cast. Other speakers include Charles P. Taft, ex-mayor of Cincinnati and brother of the late U. S. Sen. Robert Taft,. on Sunday and Lt. Governor Crawford F. Parker, June 20. Another large crowd, bringing former Greensburg residents from as far away as Florida and California, is a reunion of all
high school graduating classes from 1876 to 1959. This event is to be held Wednesday/ Frances Farmer, former movie star now with Indianapolis WFBM TV, is to be chief judge of beards sprouted by Greensburg residents in preparation for the centennial. High Winds And Heavy Rains In Seven Stales United Press International The South and Midwest were the losers Friday in a widespread weather slugfest between clashing hot and cold fronts. The clash whipped up 80-mlle-an-hour winds, funnel clouds and torrential rains "th roug hou t Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee. Nebraska, Wisconsin and Michigan. The weather was blamed for at least four deaths Thursday— two victims of a plane crash near Standish, Mich., a 13-year-old boy who drowned in Memphis, Tenn., and a Clarksdale, Miss., man who was smashed beneath the walls of a cotton gin building. Gale-force winds in Kansas and Missouri Thursday wrecked buildings, uprooted trees and touched off a fire that destroyed several buildings in Camden, Mo. The rain, hail and winds lashed through parts of Arkansas, northern Mississippi and western Tennessee, while other storms struck along a line from eastern Nebraska into northern Wisconsin. Residents of Festus, Mo., and Green Bay, Wis., reported sighting tornado funnels, but no damage was reported. The Michigan plane crash killed two Flint, Mich., men trying to land in a farm field.
Senate Committee To Fly To Dunes WASHINGTON (UPD—A Senate subcommittee flies to Indiana late today to see for itself whether 5,000 acres of the Lake Michigan dunes area should become a steel center or a national monument. Seps. Ernest Greening (DAlaska) and Frank E. Moss (DUtah) were listed as planning definitely to go. Sen. 'Diomas E. Martin (R-Iowa) was described as anxious to make the trip if he has recovered well enough from a touch of flu. The senators are members of a Public Lands subcommittee which decided to make the trip after hearing conflicting testimony on what the future of the scenic dunes area should be. Sen. Paul H. Douglas (D-Ul-has sponsored a bill to make the three-mile stretch of beach eni woodland a national park to protect its natural beauty. The legislation would block 'the National and Bethlehem Steel companies from building mills on the site and to stop Indiana from constructing a deep-water harbor at Burns Ditch. Indiana lawmakers and state officials testified against the Douglas measure in a series of hearings. The subcommittee was left wondering whether the area had any dunes left. Each side had a different story. Van Wert Man Named To Hospital Post Russell E. Ike Confers With Gov. Rockefeller WASHINGTON (UPD — Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller of New York conferred with President Eisenhower''for about 30 minutes today on what he described as “mutual legislative problems.” Rockefeller, a possible GOP presidential candidate in 1960, arrived at the White House by a side door but left through the main lobby. He was escorted to the door by White House Press Secretary James C. Hagerty who told newsmen there "was no mystery” about the governor’s call. “I was in town and I wanted to pay my respects,” Rockefeller said. “We talked a lot about mutual legislative problems. The President always is generous in his interest in what is going on in New York and in Albany problems.” Asked if there was any discussion of politics or the 1960 elections, Rockefeller said, “No, I have a lot of work to do in New York.” The governor said he also discussed briefly with the President his continuing interest in organizational problems affecting the federal government. Rockefeller worked in this field for the White House several years. Rockefeller may not yet be a candidate for the 1960 GOP presidential nomination but he is keeping himself available. Rockefeller returned to New York by private plSne. He left National Airport at 9:40 a.m. c.d.t. for La Guardia Field. Before taking off, the governor said his vis’t with Eisenhower was mainly “a courtesy call.” He came to Washington Thursday for an overnight stay and to display some of the charm which helped elect him last fall in one of the few victories that gave the GOP somelthing to cheer about. To newsmen who confronted him wherever he went, he repeated the itany familiar in N>w York State that he is not a candidate and only wants to do the best he can as governor. But the fact that he is not a candidate now does not prevent him from becoming one next year as a rival to Vice President Richard M. Nixon. He remained non-committal to questions about whether he would withdraw his name if it should be entered in the New Hampshire presidential primary next year. He said his name had not been entered yet and that he would decdie what to do if and when it is. Although he made some Stops in connection with state business, the chief purpose of Rockefeller’s visit to Washington was to be guest of honor at the Capitol Hill Club, of which he is a charter member. The club is a Republican social organization in an historic old house near the Capitol.

Steel Union's Leaders Hold Strategy Meet NEW YORK (UPD—A top strategy meeting between negotiators of the United Steelworkers Union and its international wage policy committee began today in an angry atmosphere. Members of the key 171 - man committee made no bones about the fact they strongly opposed an industry offer to modify its wage freeze in return for eight contract concessions from the union. The wage policy members, who came from all parts of "the United States and Canada, were “loaded for bear,” as one of them put it. Another committee member said. "Nobody is going to destroy this union and nobody had better try.” USW President David J. McDonald, in rejecting the industry’s proposal, said it would render the Steelworkers Union a company pawn. Company negotiators denied this. The union’s top policy - making group was meeting to consider the next move in deadlocked steel-wage negotiations. Industry - union talks recessed Thursday with a renewed outburst of charges and counter - charges and no date was set for their resumption. The industry denied a recent union accusation that the companies had “contempt” for their employes. , There was no certainty the talks would resume before the June 30 strike deadline. The 171-man international Wage Policy Committee of the union was expected to make a strong defense of the union’s contract demands and issue an ultimatum to the industry to make acceptable concessions or face a strike. The controversy Thursday exploded over action by union President David J. McDonald who notified each of the 21 major steel companies that the union would have its full bargaining committees on hand Tuesday for separate meetings with each company. R. Conrad Cooper, chief industry negotiator, told the union that the four-man team he heads is the industry’s bargaining unit regardless of whether McDonald brings the 435 men who comprise the union teams to New York. McDonald and Arthur J. Goldberg, union general counsel, said the companies have a “legal and contractual” obligation to negotiate separately with the union and hinted they will file unfair labor practice charges if the companies fail to send their individual representatives.
