(UPl)—Dave Ragan, the third “surprise champion” to pop up so far on the current professional golf tour, won’t be there when they tee off in the U S.« Open golf championship this week, but even that couldn’t mar his happiness today. Ragan, 23 - year -old Daytona Beach, F3a., native pow playing out of Chattanooga, Tenn., nailed down his first triumph lr> three years on the pro swing Sunday when he finished one stroke ahead of Gene Littler to capture the Eastern Open championship. Ragan had a final round two-under-par 70 and a 72-hole total of 273, 15 under par and a new record for this tournament played this year for the first time on the municipal Pine Ridge course. Haunting Ragan on his final round was the specter of his collapse e r rlier this year at San Diego, Ci-lif., when he blew a big lead to lose by a stroke. "I got a little scared when I three-putted the 15th green,” said Ragan. ”1 couldn’t help thinking of- how l bleyr it in San Diego.” Ragan werit into today’s final round tied with Littler, of Singing Hills, Oalif., far firstplace and then still were tied after 13 holes. He finally went ahead on the 14th, which Littler bogeyed. Then came the three putts on the 15th, but Littler blew the chance by bogeying that one, too. Ragan was the third player to post a first-time win so far on the PGA tour. The others were Bill Collins at New Orleans, -La., and Don Whitt at Memphis, Tenn. Whitt, of Borrego Springs, Calif, tied with veteran Henry Ransom of St. Andrews, 111., for third place here at 275. Ed (Porky) Oliver of Denver, Colo., was alone at 276 while Ken Venturi of San Francisco and Billy Maxwell of Odessa, Tex., tied at 277. j Don January of Denver,—Colo., I and Fred Hawkins of El Paso. jTex., tied at 278. i Major League Leaders United Press Internationlßl National League Player & Club G.
