Comments Je] The time setting of this lesson marks the beginning of the transition from small peasant ownership of the land to large estates in the hands of royalty and the rich, and the beginngin of the strujgle of the serfs against their overrards Elijah. as a prophet of Israel, was above all a preacher of social justice and righteousness*. The purpose of the lesson is to show the devastating effects of greed and other pressures causing us to surrender our religious convictions. ¥8.1,2. “And it came to pass, after these things, that Naboth, the Jezreelite, had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel, hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria... And Ahab spake unto Naboth, saying, Give me thy vineyard, that I • may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house: and I will give thee for it a better vipeyard than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of i tin money.” The phrase “after these things” referred to a war with Syria just concluded. Ahab had a place in Jesreel in addition to his home in the capital at

Samar. 25 miles south. Ahabs proposition seemed a fair one had Naboth wanted to sell his land. _ V. 3. “And Naboth said to Ahab, The Lord forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee.” The Mosaic law as expressed in Numbers 38: 7-9 forbade the selling of an inheritance outside one’s own tribe. Naboth considered himself the guardian of the estate handed down to him which was to pass to his children as their birthright and not for sale. Vs. 4-6. “And Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread. . . But Jezebel his wife came to him and said unto him, Why is thy spirit so sad, that thou eatest no bread?. . . And he said unto her, Because I spake unto Naboth the Jezeelite and said unto him. Give me thy vineyard for money, or else, if it please thee, I will give thee another vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give thee my vineyard.” Ahab sulked like a spoiled child because his wish was thwarted, but apparently he had not thought of trying to acquire the vineyard by force after Naboth said he would not sell his land. Jezebel saw that Ahab was distressed and pressed him to tell her why. V.7. “And Jezebel his wife said unto him, Dost thou not govern the kingdom of Israel? Arise, and eat bread, and let thine heart be merry: I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.” To Jezebel the rights of Naboth meant nothing—no more than .the rights of a peasant to a communist dictator today. She asked Ahab sarcastically whether or not he was the ruler that he should be thus thwarted. She decided to take over Ahab's problem with the calm composure of a gangster. Tn the verses not printed, is told the story of Jezebel’s success in carrying out her purpose. She forged her husband’s name in letters to the elders and nobles in Samaria and Jezreel, indicating the king had declared a fast, which meant a cessation of work so that they could carry out the urgent business assigned them. She arranged that false witnesses accuse Naboth of cursing God and the king and he was condemned and executed. The way was then clear for the confiscation of his property. _V5.17.18. “And the word of the Ixird came to Elijah the Tishbite saying*. Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, which is in Samaria: behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, whether he is gone , down to possess it.” Ahab had not committed the crime against Naboth but was willing to profit from it. He had not escape God's attention and Elijah felt impelled by God to confront Ahab with his guilt. V 5.19,20. “And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the Lord, hast thou killed, and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him. saying, Thus saith the Lord, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine. . . And Ahab said t Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee: becausethou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the Lord.” The prediction as to Ahab’s fate came true as related in I Kings 22:38. Ahab had allowed evil to dominate his life in bis subservience to his wicked wife. Jezebel, who was the Very incarnation of evil. —Based on coyprighted outlines produced by the Division of Christian Education, National Council (X the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A., and used by permission.

I The third Anglican Congress will be held in Toronto, Canada, in 1963. It will be attended by the bishop, one priest and one layman from each of the 350 Anglican dioceses around the world. The site was selected by Dr. G. F. Fisher, archbishop of Canterbury. Church attendance in Russia, according to the Rev. Paul Sokolowsky of Dimitrov, has increased 15 per cent in the last five years. The pastor told an audience in Edmonton. Canada, that “about 35 per cent of Russia’s 200 millicm people attend more than 20,000 Russian Orthodox churches throughout the country.”* ~ The Czechoslovak Airlines’ TU--104 jets, scheduled to start flying twice weekly to Cairo soon, are being equipped with prayer rugs for the use of Moslem passengers. The planes will be airborne at the Moslem’s early morning prayer times, and the faithful Moslem never fails to say his prayers. Nearly 100 U.S. television stations in key TV areas of the nation are giving public service cooperation to “Televangelism 1959.” Others have recently been added. Stations are now presenting the new "This Is The Answer” series of 13 dramatic episodes which deal with problems of serious national concern. Dramas illustrate how the Christian message offers a personal solution to these problems of today’s living. The Assemblies of God will observe the Protestant Centennial in Japan this year by extending its contract wih Tokyo Radio Station JOQR, the Rev. Noel Perkin, executive director of Foreign Missions, has announced. The 50,000watt station reaches aproximately 25 million persons, or more than one-fourth of the Japanese population. The Assemblies of God broadcast is one of the largest evangelical outlets in the Far East. Known as “Words of Grace,” the program is presented each Sunday afternoon from 3:40 until 3:55. The format includes singing and ministry in Japanese. Is »'•»> rom /v v J lr America was made by the sacrificial devotion and undying zeal of a number of persons and groups. Here and there were people who caught the vision of a new day and. as a result, like-minded people formed a consecrated group which launched boldly into the fulfillment ow a worthy dream. Thus the forces which have made history, and will continue to make it, are the uncrushable ideals men cherish, the definite plans they carry out, and the daring hopes which vitalised their efforts. All of us are weavers in the great fabric of history. Sometimes we are so close to our work we do not see the whole pattern, nor do we sense the hand of God designing that pattern. On Memorial Day it is well for us to renew a sense of our destiny and dedicate ourselves again to those eternal things which make us grandly human and nobly divine, whatever * our status or I role, in the accomplishment of I worthwhile things.
