Army Involved In Battle Os Seaport WASHINGTON (UPD-The U.S. Army became involved in Indiana’s battle to build a seaport in the Porter County dunes area along Lake Michigan. Col. Arthur C. Nauman, assistant chief of civil works for the Corps of Engineers, charged Tuesday that Hoosier officials have delayed construction of a deep-water harbor for the past nine years. He said the corps made a preliminary examination in 1950, but subsequent surveys were upheld pending receipt of data form Indiana on commercial possibilities of Jhe proposed Burns Ditch harbor site. - Nauman was a witness at a short revival of Senate subcommittee hearings on a bill to convert the dunes area into a national monument Sen. Paul Douglas (D-Ill.) introduced the measure aimed at preventing construc-
tion of two steel mills and a deepwater port. He testified that eight meetings with state officials since 1950 have resulted in "informal transmission” of a traffic survey made by Indiana University at the request of governor Handley. ■ Nauman said he believed a formal 'report also was forthcoming from the Board of Harbors and Terminals. Nauman sidestepped a definite yes or' - no answer when Sen. Homer E. Capehart (Rrlnd.) asked if it wasn’t a fact that “toe area of Burns Ditch adapts itself as well to a harbor because of its low altitude and flatness.” And he refused to commit himself on Douglas’ view that the lake’s north-south currents would drag sand into tkw proposed port area and necessitate constant dredging. “The colonel is a very cautious man," Douglas tald. The remark came after Nauman equivocated on his viewpoint of Douglas’ bill and the feasibility of the harbor.
