WILBUR PETRIE Continued from page one the goal of $10,154. a little better than last year. Geneva, with $339.55 did an excellent job, and others who exceeded their quotas were Monroe with $121.08; Linn Grove, with $60.25; Monroe township, with $256.67; Washington township, with $204.94; and Wabash township, with $184.65. / Ladies Honored Three Decatur ladies were honored for their dedicated service to the blood program. Mrs. H. P. Engle received a pin from chairman Fuhrman for 930 volunteer hours. Mrs. Engle has been very active in the blood program since its beginning. Mrs. Joe Hunter received a pin for 630 volunteer hours. Mrs. rzt r>auer, present chairman of the blood program, received a certificate for 1,193 volunteer hours, working with the blood program since October, 1952. New Problems Miss Selma Bernstein, national field representative of the American Red Cross, then explained the new approach of Red Cross to the future. “The changing community, with the terrific growth of the suburban area, means a change in the Red Cross policy. The young, the successful, and the middle-aged are moving into the suburbs, leaving the poor, the rich, and the elderly in the metropolitan areas. “The economy of the United States has doubled in 35 years, with the national income reaching $346 billion last year. Since 1940 there has been a 4-5% increase in productivity each year. It is estimated that there are 176 million people in the U. S. this year, and that by 1965 there will be 200 million. In 1800, 90% of the people were in rural areas, today only 30%; in 1950, 4% lived in suburbs, today that number has risen to 30%. Power Structure “There are few stable groups today, as the increased economic rotation has led to specialization and segmentation of the power structure. The pyramid system, with the rich upper class and upper middle class controling most boards, groups, etc., and then with a fairly broad base of poor people, has given way to a new structure. This new structure is a series of pyramids, labor, church, professional organizations, etc., the pres-ent-day over - organized society. This means a different approach to fund-raising and relief. ————— STORE HOURS 8 a. m. to 8 p. m. Mon. Tues. Wed Fri. and Sat. tin 9 p. m. Thursday & Sunday tUI 12 Noon KOHNE DRUG STORE

"To keep aßreast, the Red Cross must find new ways to interest the suburbanites in active participation, and to enlist the aid of labor, church and professional groups in relief work. Fund-Raising Changes “A considerable change has taken place in fund raising. At present there has been a move from separate fund-raising campaigns to joint or community campaigns. Now there seems to be a move in the opposite direction. Community drives will continue to be effective only as long as the local and national problems of the various member groups are thoroughly understood by the community fund boards. The Red Cross organization must devote itself to complete cooperation and help with the community drives, to make them successful. “A third challenge of modern life is getting Red Cross board members and workers to more thoroughly understand the underlying principles-of social welfare work, and the exact scope of each community organization in this field, especially the Red Cross’ part. The obligations of the Red Cross to Vie government because of its congressional charter, and contracts with various departments should be understood by every worker. We must accept the limitations of the Red Cross and not apologize, just accomplish what we can, she continued. Sharing experiences, anticipating needs, and progressive humanizing of the program are essential, ’’ she concludFuneral Wednesday For Mrs. Loda Mesel * Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Hardy and Hardy funeral, home in Geneva for Mrs. Loda Gene Mesel, a 50-year resident of Geneva, who died unexpectedly about 11 a.m. Sunday at her home. The Rev. Robert Bickel, pastor of the Methodist church, will officiate.’ Burial will be in the West Lawn cemetery. Surviving ' are two daughters, Mrs. Edna Eveland and Mrs. Madeline Priest, Columbus, O.; a son, William Mesel, Geneva; three grandchildren; four sisters, and a brother.
