Q—l have worked for several ’ years, but last February I broke my leg and did not return to work : until just a week ago. I can work ■ now, but shouldn’t I freeze my , Social Security account for .the ’ period I missed work? A—No, your social security ' account may be frozen only if you ‘ become permanently and totally—- ’ that is, your illness must be so 1 severe that it prevents you from doing any type of substantial gain- ; ful work and also be of indefinite > duration. • 2. Q—l have been selected to be ; a juror on what appears to be a : long trial. I will earn less than , SI2OO this year in other work, but . I may go over that if I must in- . elude my juror’s fees. Should I stop my social security checks? A—No. Juror’s fees are not included in the SI2OO you may earn. , 3. Q—My neighbor is getting social security checks because he is disabled. He’s married and has a child 12 years old. Will the new , social security law help him? A—Yes. Under the new law, ; certain dependents of workers receiving disability payments are also entitled to benefits. Therefore, in your neighbor’s case, his wife and child will be eligible for benefits, until the child reaches ’ age 18. 4. Q—l have heard that social security benefits were increased be- • ginning with the month of January, 1959. What is the highest retirement benefit payable under the new law? A—The maximum amount payable to a retired worker at present will be sll6 per month. _ .x—---your employer will take 2%% out of your pay, and he win contribute an equal amonut. Earnings up to S4BOO will count and the social se- i curity tax wiU be paid on earnings up to that amount. 6. Q —My disabled husband’s social security checks have been less than the full amount of his benefit because he is getting workmen's compensation. Was this changed by the social security amendments? Some say it was. A—Yes. Beginning with August, 1958, your husband’s full disability benefits will be paid to him, even though he is getting other disability payments. All disabled persons who have failed to apply for disability insurance benefits j because they were already receiving some type of disability payment should apply promptly at a social security office. 7. Q —l know of a large family that is getting a total of S2OO a month in social security benefits because the father died. Will the new law affect this family? A—Starting with January 1, 1959, the highest payment that can now be made to any one family group is $254. All increases are automatic, and the beneficiaries do not need to get in touch with the social security ofice. They will receive the increase due them based on the deceased worker’s earnings record. 8. Q—A friend of mine was turned down for social security disability benefits because he hadn’t been on a job covered by social security in the last few years before he became disabled. Will the new law help him? ’ A—The 1958 amendments to the social security law have made it somewhat easier to qualify for disability insurance benefits. However, there is still a work requirement that must be met. To be eligible for benefits a disabled person must have worked under social security at least 5 years out of the last 10 years before he became disabled. Your friend should get in touch with the nearest social security office immediately and find out whether he meets this work requirement.
