Blame Man Failure For Crash On El CHICAGO (UPD— The Chicago Transit Authority today blamed “man failure" for a rush hour collision of two crowded elevated trains on Chicago’s Northwest Side. About 135 persons were injured. Twenty persons remained hospitalized today with Injuries suffered in the wreck Monday. No one was killed, although the lead car of the moving first train telescoped nearly three feet Into the rear car of the standing second train. More than 600 passengers were aboard the trains, and hundreds were knocked to the floor by the impact. The injured were removed by a fire department aerial platform, ladders and by stretcher along a narrow catwalk between the elevated tracks. Most seriously hurt was Nancy Alberger, 20, whose right leg was crushed between the two trains. The motorman of the moving train, Dominic J. Paris, 46, was trapped for almost half an hour in the tangled wreckage of his cab. He suffered a foot injury. A spokesman for the CTA said a preliminary investigaiton showed human failure was largely responsible for the crash. “Paris said he saw the train ahead and immediately applied his emergency brakes,” the spokesman said. “But the evidence shows he didn’t apply the brakes soon enough.” The spokesman said investigators found “122 feet of skid marks on the rails before the point of impact.” Paris, a veteran motorman, refused to discuss the collision on advice of attorneys.
Heavy Sedation Is Given For Dulles WASHINGTON (UPD — John Foster Dulles was reported under heavy sedation today to ease the pain of his cancer. Friends of the Dulles family said the 71-year-old former secretary of state was sleeping through many hours of the day as well as the night due to the sedatives. They denied reports he was in a coma part of the time. Baby Boy Born To Margaret Truman NEW YORK (UPD — Mrs. Clifton Daniel, the former Margaret Truman, gave birth to a boy by Caesarian section at Doctors Hospital today. The baby weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces and both mother and child are doing well, a spokesman said. ‘Mrs. Daniel’s mother, Mrs,.Bess, Truman. ’-WiTe' of fo'rm'eF President Harry Truman, is in a Kansas City hospital, where she underwent surgery Monday. KINGSLEY Continued from one started the raising of vegetables, but the local people were not used to eating them, and the gardens had to be shaded from the fiercely burning tropical sun. The Moslem population does not eat pork, which also complicated things. About 85% of the people are illiterate. This adds to the problem, since they cannot read the labels on cans, and can only tell them by their shape. Actually the islands are very poorly united, and transportation between the islands is more complicated by red tape than entering Canada or Mexico. The economy is very low. and the monetary unit has depreciated tremendously in the past few years. Kingsley hired four girls to help with the cooking and housework for a total of sls a month—just $3.75 each. And this was above the average paid for trained household help on Timor. The meeting closed with a question and answer session on the problems of life in the equatorial islands. ~ ' - — — Trade to e good town — Decatur.
