Wood Building So Large It Makes Weather The world’s largest Umber structure is so large it creates its own weather. During World War 11, there was built at, Tillamook, Oregon, and four other strategic spots around the nation’s shoreline, five huge buildings to house ocean-patrolling blimps. These were by far the largest buildings in the world ever built of lumber and Umber. Utilizing a new system of ring connectors developed by the lumber industry, small timbers were fabricated into arches of fantastic The blimp hangar measures 1,000 feet long and 237 feet wide, and the clear span, post-free arches reach to a height of 153 feet. Lumber in the structure was all treated with fire retardant chemicals. The vast wood building today i houses several industries including a plywood plant and sawmill. It is reported that, under certain conditions, it may rain in one end of • the building and not in the other. A -few years ago, a fire started around the exhaust from one of the plywood plant’s dust vents. The fire was so high that no available fire equipment could reach it 150 feet above the ground. However, when the accumulation of dust had burned, the fire came into contact with the- lumber which had been chemically treated with a fire retardant Substance and soon burned out. .: - The. gjaiu. structure J*, hpilt ‘ tkeiy of: sturdy Douglas fir Vmbers ,- the nation’s most widely used lumber species.
