Some Union Workers Cross Picket Lines FOAPE CANAVERAL, Fla gUPD—Missile workers who ai first refused io cross picket lines of striking carpenters began trick ling through the gates of this missile test center today. There was no estimate available of the number of workers whc were absent from their jobs as a result of the four-day-old wage dispute between the carpenters and civilian contractors. But officials of other 'Unions conceded that some Os their members were crossing the picket Ifhes. Indications were that missile operations would not be affected even if the carpenters’ strike were prolonged. The carpenters agreed Sunday to drop the key issue of retroactive pay raises if the contractors would boost the amount of the raise. ; Nearly 3,000 members of other unions refused to cross the carpenters’ picket lines Friday. But traffic flowed smoothly into the cape and nearby Patrick Air Bbrce Base today and many other union members were reported entering the missile base. About 115 carpenters are involved in the dispute. They have been seeking a 25-cent-an-hour pay hike, retroactive to April 1 when their contract expired. The contractors offered a 15cent hike effective when the union signs a new contract, as part of a 35-cent two-year package. The carpenters now average $2.85 an hour. The Air Force has stayed out of the dispute, ©officials have said they knew of no plans to use military personnel to perform the chores of absent maintenance permomL , LEGAL NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING Notice la hereby given that the Local Alcoholic Beverage Board ol Adame County, Indiana, Will at 1 P.M. on the 9 day of June, 19.59 at the Commissioners Boom AuStar's Office in the City (or town) Decatur, Indiana In said County begin investigation of the appllcattion of the following named person requesting the issue to th< applicant at the location hereinafter set out, of the Alcoholic Beverage permit of the claw here In after designated and will at said time and place, recedv information concerning the fltnes of eald applicant, and the fcroprtet' Issuing the permit applied for t such applicant at the premise Andrew Appleman and Patrie: Mansfield (Restaurant) Beer a n.i Wine Retailer, ?02 West Monroe St. Decatur, Indiana SAID INVESTIGATION WILL BI OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, AND PUB LBO PARTICIPATION IS REQUES INDIANA ‘LCOHOLIC BEVERAGI COMMISSION By E.G. Short Wave Radio Important To Ike WASHINGTON (UPI) —Back stairs at the White House: Short wave radio plays an increasing role in the life of a president. For example, when President Eisenhower’s plane approaches an airport, an Army Signal Corps specialist aboard contacts another on the ground and relays information on the precise landing time and any last-minute change in plans. Hie specialist on the ground can relay to the plane any late change in the makeup of dignitaries on hand to greet the President. The two-way communications are handled over portable short wave .sets, freeing the plane radios to handle more important details. Several small short wave sets also are on the golf course every time the President plays. Secret Service agents report back to a central point every time the President putts out on a green, every time he tees off on another hole. Thus, an exact check is kept on his whereabouts so he can be reached in a hurry in case of an emergency. Howell G. Crim, who died last week after a long illness, was chief usher of the White House from ager of the White House from the days of Hoover until he retired two years ago. Crim used to boast that he’d never lost even a demi-tasse spoon in the hundreds of banqutes and luncheons he arranged. This was true, but he had some awfully close shaves. At one diplomatic dinner during Truman’s administration, servants reported that the wife of an ambassador had made off with every single,, piece service at her place. With visions of an international incident running through his mind, Crim began a methodical search for the missing knives, forks and spoons while the guests were listening to an after-dinner musicale in the East Room. About midnight, the missing service was found among the dirty linen in the basement, carefully wrapped in a napkin. Expectant Mother Wounded By Pistol INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — Mrs. Dorothy Mclntyre, 27, an expectant mother, was wounded accidentally Saturday night by a pistol her husband, Robert, 22, was examining. Officials at Methodist Hospital reported she was in fair condition from the bullet wound in her abdomen.
