Two Slate Convicts Charge Mistreatment MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (UPDTwo convicts in Indiana State Prison charged today at a court hearing that they were chained naked to cement slabs for days as punishment for an alleged altercation with two prison guards last June. Prison officials promptly denied the accusations. James Denton, Indianapolis, and James Jordan, Madison County, made the charges as they appeared in LaPOrte Superior Court for arraignment on charges of assault and battery with intent to kill and to escape prison. Denton and Jordan pleaded innocent to the charges and trial ' was set for June 8 by Judge Norman Sallwasser. s They were accused of stabbing and wounding a guard and holding another guard as hostage last June 7 while intoxicated from homemade raisin jack. Denton told Sallwasser he was chained for two weeks and Jordan said he was chained for a week without proper food, exercise or toilet facilities and that they had been locked in solitary confinement for nearly a year. Sallwasser told the prisoners that their story of mistreatment would have no bearing on the case since the alleged chaining took place after the offenses charged i against the men. When Sallwasser made that ■statement, Denton said: •‘I therefore denounce my ! American citizenship and don’t want no more to do with the I United States.” Warden Alfred Dowd was away land not available to reply to the charges. But deputy warden Robj ert Hock said the charges were I untrue and without foundation. |o— _ - T -- Household Scrapbook By ROBERTA LEE 0 Toothbrush Care The toothbrushes should be disinfected frequently by dipping them into boiling water. Pour peroxide of hydrogen over the bristles then rinse well with hot water. This will cleanse and whiten the bristles simultaneously. Sandwiches Delicious sandwiches can be made from tuna fish and celery in equal parts, mixed with mayonnaise dressing. Choped green pepper will add to the flavor. Stain Remover An effective remover fbt grape or grape juice is water at drinking temperature. These stains should be treated as soon as possible. Whipping Cream Add one-fourth teaspoon of lemon juice to each cup of heavy cream to hasten the whipping. Be sure to have the cream, and utensils thoroughly chilled, so as to prevent the mixture from turning to butter. This is particularly important during the summer months. Olive Oil Substitute When your supply of olive oil is running low, when making salad dressing, melt .butter and add it to the oil. It makes a good substitute. Lumpy Salt To prevent Xhe salt from hardening and becoming lumpy in the saltcellar, mix a little cornstarch with the salt before filling the cellar.
