Indians Knock f Over Yankees Third In Row -X By MILTON RICHMAN United Press International All’s fair in love and war, so the Indians are now using a •'rock” to knock off the Yankees. This particular rock happens to be Rocky Colavito and what hurts the Yankees is that he was born and bred in the Bronx and always dreamed of playing for them. Tueaday night, he blasted his eighth homer, two doubles and a single in a 7-6 victory that represented Cleveland’s third straight triumph of the season over the slumping world champions. Cal Mclish gave up homers to Mickey Mantle, Elston Howard and Yogi Berra but still wound up w|th his fifth straight victory. He needed relief help from Jim Perry to protect Cleveland's game lead in the American League race. Williams Makes Debut The White Sox went 12 innings to beat the Red Sox, 4-3, and the Senators topped the Tigers, 7-4. Rain postponed the Kansas CityBaltimore game. Los Angeles climbed into a tie for the National League lead with a 3-1 win over Philadelphia; Pittsburgh nipped San Francisco, 6-5, in 12 innings; St. Louis beat Cincinnati, 7-4, and Chicago licked Milwaukee. 7-3. Even Ted Williams’ first appearance of the season couldn’t help the Red Sox in their extrainning struggle with the White Sox. Williams was hitless in five trips. Al Smith’s two-run homer in the 12th off loser Murray Wall decided the outcome although Jackie Jensen hit hsi eighth homer off

winner Rudy Arias in the bottom at the 12th. Harmon Killebrew, Washington’s new wonder boy, slammed his 11th and 12th homers and drove in five runs against Detroit The 22-year-old Killebrew hit a two-run homer off Frank Lary in the sixth to tie the score at 3-3 and then belted a three-run smash off Ray Narleskl in the seventh. Bill Fischer was the winner and Dave Staler the loser. Southpaw Danny McDevitt limited the Phillies to five hits in pitching the Dodgers into a firstplace tie with the Braves. One of the hits he allowed was a homer by Willie Jones. McDevitt singled home the Dodgers’ first run off loser Gene Conley and the lead run scored on an error by shortstop Joe Koppe. Daniels Gets Win Pittsburgh came up with three runs in the 12th to edge the Giants, who rallied for two runs in their half of the 12th. Dick Stuart’s double and Bill Mazeroski’s single broke a 3-3 tie in the decisive frame and two more runs crossed on a walk with the bases full and a single by Roberto Clemente. Two errors by Clemente and one by Don Hoak helped the Giahts to their final two runs in the bottom of the frame. Bennie Daniels was credited with his first victory. Home runs by Gary Blaylock, Joe Cunningham and Ken Boyer carried the Cardinals to their victory over the • Reds. Blaylock gained the decision although he weakened in the seventh and gave way to Bill Smith. Brooks Lawrence was roughed up for eight of the Cards’ 12 hits in 2 2-3 innings and suffered his second loss. Pinch hitter Earl Averill’s grand-slam homer with two out in the ninth off Lew Burdette gave the Cubs their come-from-behind victory over the Braves.

Jackets Beat Willshire By 4 To 2 Score A hard-hitting Willshire, 0., baseball team subbed for Hartford City Tuesday afternoon at Worthman field, giving the Decatur Yellow Jackets a run for their money before bowing, 4-2.’ The victory was the seventh in a row for the Jackets and\ gives them a seasonal record of ’lO wins and three losses. Larry Daniels scattered five hits, allowing one earned run while walking none and striking out nine to boost his season’s high to 43. The' Jackets garnered only three hits, two coming in the fourth inning when they scored all their runs. Jackets Score In Fourth Bill Bischoff opened the big fourth being hit by “pitcher Tony August. Terry Holtsberry followed with a base on balls and both runners advanced on Tom Grabill’s sacrifice bunt. An intentional pass to Steve Dellinger set the stage for Steve Lytle's basesloaded single to score two runs. Jim Reidenbach singled home Dellinger with a shot to left field that sent Lytle to third. Johnny Cowan squeezed Lytle home with a sacrifice bunt and was safe as the first baseman dropped the pitcher’s throw. An attempted double steal backfired as Reidenbach was thrown out at the plate as Cowan drew a throw to first attempting to go to second base. Willshire rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth when Don Duff was hit by Daniels and Cdwan let a hot grounder go through him for an error. Ted Clouse scored both runners, lining a double to left field. Daniels struck out pinch hitter Kathy and Reidenbach threw out Joe Schanffer to end the threat. Title Game Friday Hartford City cancelled the game earlier in the day because of inclement weather. Coach Bill McColly called Willshire to arrange the last-minute scheduling of the contest. Basilio In Denial Os Robinson Fight PHILADELPHIA (UPD - The camps of both Carmen Basilio and 1 Gene Fullmer scoffed today at Sugar Ray Robinson's announcement that he has signed to defend the world middleweight championship against Basilio here Sept. 21. Former champ Basilio, who says all he knows of the proposed deal is what he reads in the papers, said in Syracuse, N.Y., that the terms outlined “sound like one of Robinson’s deals.” And Marv Jenson, manager of Fullmer, insisted his fighter and Basilion are signed to meet for Robinson’s vacated title in Syracuse, sometime in July. Robinson was shorn of his crown by the National Boxing Association nine days ago for failure to defend since winning his title back from Basilio in Chicago on March 25, 1958. Robinson remains champion in the eyes of the nonmember New York Athletic Commission but that group is ready to crack down on Sugar Ray Friday. There was uncertainty still whether Sugar Ray’s signing in Philadelphia got him off the hook in New York state. Under a court order Robinson has until Friday to “enter into articles of agreement” for the Basilio fight. Whether his solo signing would be interpreted as entering into articles of agreement was questionable. The announcement of the 15round rubber match at municipal stadium, with a gross of $750,000 to $1,000,000 predicted, was made by Alfred Klein, a member of the Pennsylvania Athletic Commission. Dr. Ward Wylie, NBA president, said later in Mullens, W. Va., he would recommend that the NBA executive committee reinstate 'Robinson as world champion for the title defense. Women Bowlers Will Meet Friday Night An important meeting of the women’s bowlers association will be held at 7:30 o’clock Friday evening at the Mies Recreation alleys. This meeting concerns the city bowling association, and all members of the women’s association are urged to be present. | Today's Sport Parade | (Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.) ‘ By OSCAR FRALEY United Press International NEW YORK (UPI) — It’s difficult to imagine that Frank Gifford, movie actor, model and allpro halfback, had anything to feel frustrated about. But he did. 0 Through 12 years of football, four at the University of Southern California and eight with the New York Giants, the collar ad Californian wanted to be a quarterback. USC’s twoplatoon game placed him at defensive safety and with the Giants he wag too valuable as a running threat. Then, too, he wasn’t exactly reaching movie stardom. True, he had parts in "Up Periscope” and "Darby’s Rangers,” but, he says, “you had to look fast to see me.” Then he did a teevee trailer for a gangbuster series but nothing happened so last year he instated the studio by choosing to return to football. Asks For Chance Thus six weeks ago he sat down and wrote a letter to coach Jim Lee Howell asking for a chance at quarterback. Gifford was almost as surprised as anyone else when the Giants announced that he would be given a chance in this long-coveted spot. It also may cost one of Frank’s best friends his job. That would be Charley Conerly, Gifford’s roommate and a man who for years has beaten off one threat after another to his job’ But at 38, Conerly is starting to show signs of the wear and tear handed out in the bruising pro circuit. The Giants think that with Coneriy at-the ag£ where he can. go at any time, and with Utah’s Lee Grosscup promising but completely untested, Gifford can get the job done. There are figures to substantiate this theory. Good Running Passer The brown-haired Gifford has attempted 41 tosses on the pass or run option play from halfback during his seven years with the Giants. He completed 19 passes—--12 of them going for touchdowns. Only three were intercepted and this mark labels him one of the best running passers in the game. His biggest chore will be in learning to pass out Os the pocket. The Giants are firmly convinced that Gifford can give them a newer and more wide, open attack. They ’class him as a better passer than any other halfback in the league and potentially a better running quarterback than any , other around. He’s just happy for , the chance.
