yard " as a place for pleasurable, healthful relaxation and recreation for the whol,e family. Often it is possible to put a bit of “vacation fun” into every day of the long spring and summer months by imaginatively gearing one's grounds to play a larger and happier role in faipily life. A patio or terrace of flagstone, concrete or plastice tile can provide a perfect setting for blissful sun-baking, outdoor eating and informal entertaining. Building a patio is a fairly simple job for the handly home owner, and by doing much of fill of the work, hiiriself,

he can bring the cost down to a a very modest figure. Screened Patios Many home owners are screening their patios to provide a degree of privacy as well as protection from insects. By so dojng they make the patio just as useful by night as by day as a place for card games, reading, late dining and other activities requiring illumination. Actually such a patio becomes an “outdoor living room.” Another way to achieve privacy g>r patio or terrace is through the judicious planting of shrubbery, or by rustic type high fencing. A barbecue pit, in conjunction with a patio, or by itself, is becoming an increasingly popular feature of the back yard. Many a man-of-the-house is finding a new avocation as “outdoor chef,” especiajly skilled in cooking steaks, hamburgers, frankfurters and other eatables that never before tasted so good! A swimming pool .though admittedly among the more ambitious, outdoor living projects, is becoming increasingly common as an adjunct to the home grounds. Because pools can be built to fit* virtually any reasonable area, and because costs have been brought within reach of the average family, they are no longer confined to the large estate, but are quite | apt to be found almost anywhere. Where a conventional swimming pool is not feasible, there are large plastic wading pools, many of them deep enough to permit the adults of the family to join the younger members in the fun. Speaking of the children, there are “kiddie gyms” slides and sand boxes that will make their own back yard just about the best place in town for fun. Much of this play equipment has. in recent years, been developed into imaginative modern forms, molded in concrete, that not only hold special appeal for the small fry, but also add an interesting

DESIGN C-554. A spacious Ushaped kitchen-dinette is the hub of this economical plan. There is plenty of floor io ceiling wardrobe’ space in the three bedrooms. The generous hall closets form a sound barrier between the sleeping and living areas. The x living room has privacy, excellent wall space and colorful planter that forms the vestibule. Bookshelves have been placed in it to the living room side. Not including 346 square feet for the attached garage, but including a full basempnt, the plan contains 23,166 cubic feet and covers 1,188 square feet. contemporary touch to the appearance of the grounds. Lawn Possibilities The lawn itself, if properly built and well kept, can provide the setting for a great deal of outdoor fun by grown-ups and children alike. Badminton, croquet, volley ball and bowling-on-the-green are some of the games that can be enjoyed on the lawn. Often, when space permits, it is even possible to have your own “clock golf set-up (excellent for sharpening one’s putting game) at your very door-step. Where a sufficient length of space is available, a shuffle-board court of concrete or tile can be installed at moderate cost, and provide many hours of sport for everyone. Outdoor illumination of the lawn, via post-monuted gas, electric or kerosene lights is often quite practicable and costs relatively little. This will make it possible to enjoy lawn games long after sunset.

Plant Trees To Provide Needed Shade There’s a simple trick in planting shade trees, according to tfce American Association of Nurserymen. Plant them at some distance to the west of the place you want to shade, slightly north of due west. If you plant the tree, or trees, right over. s the spot, the shade will fall to the east of it in the afternoon. The hottest part of the summer day usually is in mid and late afternoon, when the sun's rays slant considerably. Plant the shade tree far enough to the west so the slanted rays will be intercepted and the shade will fall where you want it. For shade directly over the outdoor living area in mid-day, when the sun is at its zenith, the shade tree should be planted at the edge of the area, but not where an outdoor fireplace will scorch leaves on the lower branches. The same rules hold true for i shade on a terrace or patio. If the terrace is on the east side of the house only the directly overhead sun needs to be screened off because the house will shade the terrace in the afternoon. In this case, the shade tree can be right beside the terrace to guard against

Beautiful Lawns Are Result Os Planning, Work and Care

A beautiful lawn that can serve double-duty as a practice putting green is the dream of most gardeners. You'll grow such lawns by replacing those dreams with hard work, loving care and intelligent planning-. Here are some tips that your gardening tools are cleaned should help: Before you start digging, be sure and Sharpened. Spade, fork, rake, mower hose and sprinkler, roller, spreader and sprayers are required tools. But remember that you can always rent (or borrow, if you're lucky) the expensive items. Knowledge of your soil is a prerequisite for a good-looking lawn. Check with your state agricultural experiment station, county agent or local nurseryman for a soil analysis and for help <?n grading, fertilizing and sowing. It's equally important to rid your soil of grubs, and other insects that destroy your turf by feeding on grass roots. An early spring spray treatment with a chlordane solution, will wipe out these sub-sur-face soil insects and prevent brown spots of dead grass from ruining your lawn this summer. The Antrol concentrate comes bottled as a complete unit that attaches easily to any ordinary garden hose. And the experts advise soaking mid-day sun. But if the terrace is on the west side of the house, two trees may be needed, one at some distance to the west, in order to block the hot afternoon sun and one close to the terrace to intercept .the sun’s direct rays at midday and up to three o’clock or so in the afternoon. Shade trees can make a difference of five to ten degrees in the temperature of the outdoor living area or on the terrace. They must be planted in the right locations to achieve the best results. Consult with your nurseryman. A difference of five to ten degrees on a hot summer day means the difference between comfort and discomfort. These suggestions for locating shade trees also can be used to make various rooms inside the home more comfortable by shading one or more windows and the wall of the house that face the hot afternoon sun. WOUD FENCING Besides protecting property, a wood fence can serve as a shield against sun and noise. WALLPAPER Nothing Decorates Like WALLPAPER . - « x—;— . yqut grass to a depth of at least eight inches when you water. A light sprinkling of the lawn surface will do more to encourage growth of weeds than grasses. As for mowing procedure, it’s a good idea to eneck with your nurseryman to determine the best method for your particular kind of grass. A cutting height of 1% inches or more is a general rule of thumb, because clipping too short will help crabgrass and other weeds thrive.
