NATIONAL EMBLEM CLUB .... WEEK BEING OBSERVED Mrs. Oran Schultz, press correspondent of the Decatur Emblem club, has received word that the supreme president, Cecile Cushing, has designated the week of May 10 through May 17, as national Emblem club week. “The Emblem club was chartered at Providence, R.I. under the state laws of Rhode Island, Nov. 29, 1926. The purpose of organizing was to unite under one banner all Elks ladies clubs to develop a deeper, sense of woman’s responsibilities toward community service and civic betterment, to give valued and continous assistance to the Elks. Os equal importance to create a center of social activities where members, their household and friends would be drawn together under the bonds of ‘Goodfellowship,* “Emblem clubs are not to be considered as an auxiliary to the Elks, and no Elks lodge has jurisdiction in the formation of an Emblem club. “Beginning with nine clubs the first year, the number has grown to 342 throughout the United States, Guam and the Canal Zone. The supreme Emblem club is proud of the fact that Emblem clubs have been accepted in our new state of Alaska 100%. “Financial assistance to varied number of charities amounted to $300,000 the year of 1958 alone. This does not include time and efforts that have been donated by club members in community services. — “Scholarships play an important part in Emblem club activities both on a national and subordinate club scale. National award winners are announced each year at the national convention, which is held in the home state of the national president. This year the 33rd national convention will be held in Seattle, Wash. October 6 through 10. The Decatur Emblem Club 172 received its charter in 1949 with approximately 50 members. Mrs. George Laurent served as its first president and at the present time Mrs. Carl Baxter is serving as president. Any lady who has a husband, son, father or brother in good standing with the Elks lodge is eligible to become a member of the Emblem club. “Die name Emblem signifies the flag of the United States of America, which is preserved and cherished as a priceless possession. May we push forward with greater strength and vigor to new achievements, truly ‘lighting the wax’ to truth, justice and charity, which is our club motto.” Members of the Naomi Circle of the Presbyterian church are asked to take notice that the meeting to be held Wednesday at 8 o’clock will be held at the home of Mrs
