Social Security Quiz Answers Many Queries
(Editor’s note: Do you have any questions about Social Security? We all do, don’t we? Send any question you might have to Social Security Quiz, c/o Dally Democrat. You’ll find your answer in this column, which is published each Saturday.) 1. Q. The Social Security Office has noticed an increasing number of letters lately coming from high school students asking for social security numbers which they expect to use when taking jobs during the school year. The other day they recived one which reads as follows: , “Please send me my social surity number immediately. lam now living in Arizona and need my number before I can go to work ” The Ft. Wayne Social Security Office explains this as follows: A. This young man must make application for a social security number. To do this, he would not have had to write our office in Ft. Wayne. He could have gone to his local office in Arizona. Social security cards can be issued anywhere in the country. This is also true when duplicate cards are needed, regardless of where the orginal card was obtained. There is usually a delay of about two weeks in issuing a duplicate social security card. However, if the card is urgently needed, a temporary receipt may be issued for use until a duplicate is received. We are continuously advising workers to replace lost or misplaced cards immediately, in order to avoad any inconvenience such as suggested by this writer. 2. Q. I discontinued my dairy farm in December and expect to file for social security benefits as soon as I have filed my tax return for 1958. However, my partner who has already filed, tells me I can’t count the income I got from the cows that I sold. I can’t see why not, since I raised them myself. A. You can’t receive social security credit for income from the sale of a cow held for dairy purposes. This is considered as sale of a capital asset rather than a product raised for sale. 3. Q. I received a card with my social security check this week saying I should make an annual report of my earnings last year. I’m 82 years old and didn’t work.
What kind of a report am I supposed to make? A. A person drawing social security benefits must make an annual report of his earnings to the Social Security Administration if he is under 72 and earned over SI2OO in a year. Since you’re over 72, you need take no action. 4. Q. I’m a 69 year old clergyman and did not elect to be covered by social security. However, I do receive social security benefits on the basis of former work. I’m told now I’ll have to pay back the social security benefits I have received. Why is this when my income as a clergyman is not under social security? A. AU earnings before age 72 from work you do for others or self employment must be cmsidered in the amount a person is permitted to earn whUe drawing benefits. This includes all types of work whether or not it is •covered by social security, and would include your income as a non-cov-ered clergyman. 5. Q. lam drawing social security benefits and have a small business. Am I graded on my gross or net income? A. Only your net income or profit from your business is considered under the Social Security Act. 6. Q. My wife is only 55 and has never worked but is totaled disabled. Can she draw social security benefits on my earnings because of her disability? A. No. She could qualify for disability incurance benefits only if she had worked under social security. This dyed-in-the-wool artist, a shy girl from the rugged land of the Acadians immortalized in LongfeUow’s “Evangeline/’ has made hooked paintings of President Eisenhower, Queen Elizabeth 11, Arthur Godfrey and his horse, and the late Pope Pius XII. The portrait of Ike, copied in home-dyed wools from a color photograph which the Republican National Committee sent her, hangs in the White House. It prompted a complimentary letter from the President, no mean artist himself. At the moment. Miss LeFort is branching out from people as subjects and doing the Mayflower II from a color photograph. She has just completed her most ambitious project—a copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.” This intricate painting measures 8 feet in Width and 4% feet in height.
