Commodores Are Defeated By Willshire The Willshire baseball team staved off another Decatur Catholic rally in the last inning, beatI ing the hapless Commodores, ’lO- - at McMillen Field Wednesday afternoon. The Commodores’ inability to hit with men on base resulted in their I fifth straight setback without a ; victory. Willshire hit safely : nine times to Decatur’s five. The Commodores left the bases full in the second and fourth innings and had the bases full again in the seventh with four runs in, when a double play ended the ball game. A total of ten Comi modores were left on base in the game. Willshire counted three times in the opening inning and added four more in the third for a ; bulging 7-0 lead. Two walks, two errors and two singles accounted for the first inning runs, while two errors, a walk, a single and a double accounted for the third inning tallies. Decatur Catholic broke into the scoring column in the fourth when Rumschlag walked, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on 1 an error by Willshire third sacker Dave Fickert. They added anothed run in the sixth after Willshire ran the count to 10-1 by scoring three in the top of the inning, Kauffman reached first on Frank James’ error, moved to third on two bases on balls, and scored on bose’s singlg. The frame ended when Blythe struck out and catcher Gibbons whipped a throw to third baseman Medaugh, catching R. Reed off base. The Commodores scored four in the last inning, Kohne reached base on an error, walks to Rumschlag, Joe Omlor, Kauffman, R. Reed, an error by the pitcher, I and Lose’s second single. Golf Association announced today the exact record number of golfers who will compete for the U. S. Open championship this year is ?,402. Musial Slugs 399th Homer As Cards Win By FRED DOWN United Press International Stanley Frank Musial took his individual stance today on the doorstep of another exclusive club. The Man. who joined the 3,000 hit circle almost a year ago, slugged his 399th major .league homer and his first of the year Wednesday night as the St. Louis Cardinals turned back the Philadelphia Phils, 8-7. Never less than a .300 hitter and in the double figures, homerwise, 16 of 17 active years with St. Louis, Musial had his best homer season in 1948, when he clouted 39 and was voted the National Leagues Most Valuable Player for the third time. Musial’s blast and a two-run pinch double by Joe Cunningham were the big blows as the Cardinals rallied with four runs in the eighth inning. The rally rewarded rookie Howie Nunn with his first major league win. n other senior loop action, the Milwaukee Braves retained first place with a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-0. Over in the American League, the Cleveland Indians slipped back toward the field one full game when they bowed to the Baltimore Orioles, 6-5, the Washington Senators whipped the Chicago White Sox, 6-4, the Boston Red Sox crushed the Detroit Tigers, 17-6, and the New York Yankees connected for more than one homer in a game for the first time since April 29 as they downed the Kansas City Athletics. 7-4. The Yankees wasted no time flexing their muscles. Tony Kubek led off with a homer and doubles by John Blanchard and Gil McDougald plus a single by Bill Skowron routed Bob Grim before a man was out. Norm Siebern greeted Ralph Terry with a double that made it a three-rim ! inning and came back in the next frame to blast a three-run homer after a single by Blanchard and McDougald’s double.
