City Os Chicago In Role Os World Port By EVERETT R. IRWIN Drifted Press International CHICAGO (UPD - Chicago, the “Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat, Playdr with Railroads and the Ration’s Freight Handler,” shouldered a new job this Week. It heaved cargo aboard deep sea vessels in its new role as World port. The city patinged Into a new economic era with the opening of toe St. Lawrence Seaway and toe arrival here of the first ships to cruise through toe deepened channel and the Great Lakes. Somd of toe more optimistic advocates of toe newly completed deep water route to the Atlantic said the city, and perhaps the entire Midwest, was on the brink of an “economic renaissance.” More conservative observers warned that the seaway may be slow to. make its impact felt but that eventually it will bring greatly increased trade, more industry, and an upsurge of population to the nation's second largest city. Thomas H. Coulter, chief executive officer of toe Chicago Association of Commerce and Industry, predicted Chicago will become one of the nation’s greatest ports in terms of export tonnage and dollar volume.

Mayer, associate professor of geography at the University of Chicago, said Chicago would corner 40 to 50 per cent of all direct overseas traffic on the seaway. Mayer said Chicago has a ‘.‘maximum potential” as a port because seagoing vessels would want to penetrate as far into America’s hinterland as possible. Mayer and Maxim M. Cohen, head of the Chicago Regional Port District, said the city has an advantage over other lake ports because it lies at the foot of Lake Michigan astride an inland waterway connection to the Mississippi Valley,. Newspaper editorials heralded the St. Lawrence opening as an event that would “stimulate new industries and a rising population” and “mean a historic change in Chicago’s place in world commerce.” But one writer warned that “the I city will not transform from worm to butterfly overnight.” More Ships Coming “ ” The Chicago Association of Commerce and Industry, predicted i recently that export tonnage of general cargo—the “gracy” of a 1 port operation — would soar to 489,000 tons in 1960 and 629,000 tons by 1965. In 1956 the city exported 123,000 tons of general cargo. | In a two-year study, the association’s research department also concluded that grain movement through the Port of Chicago in 1960 will be two and one-half times greater than in 1956. By 1965, it said, grain shipments will be five and one-half tinjes greater than in 1956. The steamship industry’s big hopes for more business is reflected in a boost in service. Thirty - one regularly scheduled Great Lakes - overseas services will operate to Chicago at the outset of the 1959 navigation season.
