Jackets Edge Portland On Theft Os Home Third baseman Jim Reidenbach stole home with two out in the fifth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie as Decatur edged Portland, 2-1, TXiesday afternoon for its seventh victory in 10 games. Hie Yellow Jacket baseball team is now in a virtual tie for first in the NEIC as Angola’s Aces dropped their first game to defending champions, New Haven. Pitcher Barley Wolfe fireballed his way to his second victory of the season, allowing four hits, three walks and striking out six. Portland found itself beating Wolfe’s curve ball into the dirt, getting few good belts uff the big righthander’s fast ball. Panthers Score First Portland scored first in the opening inning on a single by second baseman Takats and a curving double to right field by third baseman Engle. Decatur tied the gape in the top Os the fourth as Steve Dellinger romped home from first on pinch hitter Tom Grabill’s double to right center. Dellinger had singled through the box after two were out Reidenbach walked in the fifth, stole second, taking third on a throwing error by catcher Mumby, but was apparently stymied as the next two batters popped up. With Bob Shraluka batting, Coach Bill McColly sent the red-haired third sacker streaking for the plate. Shraluka feigned a swing and the catcher never made a play on Reidenbach as he slid across the plate unmolested, for the winning marker. Defensive Standouts Defensively, the Jackets played a stellar game. Dellinger cut down a Panther runner,- trying to score from second on a single in the third inning with a one-bounce strike to the plate, and infielders Reidenbach and John Cowan came up with neat plays time after time. Larry Daniels, playing right field, showed his pitching arm off in the fifth when he forced a runner at second base with a perfect strike after Takats had lined a shot to right. The Jackets are still 3-1 in the conference, while Angola is 4-1. They play at Concordia today in a league encounter, and meet Columbia City here on Thursday. They play undefeated New Haven next week. New Haven has played only one league match, but meets Bluffton today at the Tigers’ home field. Fast Action Tuesday Al Motor Speedway INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — The Indianapolis Motor Speedway saw some fast action Tuesday, along with a minor disciplinary incident. Dempsey Wilson, Hawthorne, Calif., wheeled one of the powerful Novis around the track at an unofficial 141 miles per hour for his first trip in ti|e sleek, eightcylinder roadster. , Wilson said he was “just idling around feeling out the corners.” The other Novi, with veteran Paul RusSo in the cockpit, was expected to have its “shakedown” run today. The only other driver to travel faster than 141 so far this year is Roger Ward, who was clocked unofficially at 142.4 Saturday. Ward, however, was ‘ordered off the track Tuesday by USAC officials who thought he was not taking precautionary backward glances at usual points. But Ward told Chief Observer George Conner that he did look back but not at usual spots. "There was no argument,” Chief StewarcT Harlan Fengler said. "Sometimes one man picks a different place to look around and it has to be straightened out. “He explained himself and that was all there was to it,” Fengler said. In other track action, Dick Rathmann of Speedway turned in an unofficial speed of 139.8 miles per hour in the same car he drove to a record average speed of 145.974 to capture the pole last year. And Don Branson, Urbana, Hl., passed his driver’s test in perfect shape by driving 40 straight laps without a miss. In the meantime, Speedway President Tony Hulman announced two new special awards for the Memorial Day Classic which will mean extra cash to the chief mechanic and the driver of the winning car.
