Radioactive Water On Danish Island LONDON (UPI) — Discovery of radioactive rainwater on a Danish island caused new concern today in Britain where Prime Minister Harold Macmillan was to teU Parliament about the dangers of atomic fallout. Danish health authorities Monday ordered Saltholm Island inhabitants not to drink their rain Water because it was polluted with radioactivity “beyond the danger Umit.” They started importing drinking water today. The pollutiin was attributed to faUout from Russian nuclear explosions in Siberia. A new report by an official British medical commission said, meanwhile, that the benefits from X-rays far outweighed the risks of radiation from them. The report was based on examination of 5,000 cases in 140 hospitals. Macmillan told Parliament last week that man-made radioactivity was hot dangerous at the moment. Eight Labor members of Parliament and two Conservatives immediately filed questions asking clarification. Dansh authorities indicated the ban on drnking water for Saltholm Island inhabitants was only temporary. Residents of the island, situated in the Oeresund Strait between Denmark and Sweden, depend on rain water for drinking purposes. Wells bring in salt water. Forecast Continued High Temperatures United Press International Temperatures soared in Indiana today toward all-time record heights for so early in the season. Thunderstorms were expected to clear the air a little and drop temperatures by late Wednesday. But earlier predictions of a ‘cool’, (lay Thursday were revised to ~catl~for only “a little cooler’’ and top readings from 80 to 85 The mercury was expected to epest from around 90 north to the low 90s central and south this afternoon. If the temperature reaches 93 at Indianapolis, it will be the warmest reading ever recorded in the season before May 9 and the first time the mercury has hit such a level in nearly three years. The revised forecasts indicated the five-day hot spell which previously sent temperatures to record heights may not end soon, after all. Sultry weather with high humidity blanketed Hoosierland again today, threatening temperatures in the 90s for the fourth day in a row. Top readings were expected to range from the mid 80s north to the low 90s south. But colder temperatures were expected to sweep in Wednesday on the heels of rain, and the outlook for Thursday was “partly cloudy and cool.” The “heat' wave” arrived last Saturday, pushing the mercury to new records for the date and recording marks within two or three degrees of the hottest tempera tures recorded last summer. Highs Monday ranged from 79 iri the Chicago area to 95 in the Louisville area. Evansville had 91, Indianapolis 87, within one degree of the all-time record for the date; South Bend 86 and Fort Wayne 85. Then the mercury dipped into the 50s and 60s during the night when lows ranging from 54 at Fort Wayne to 65 at Indianapolis were recorded. A few isolated thundershowers were expected to occur this afternoon, then the shower activity will become general tonight and continue into Wednesday. Lows tonight will range from the low 60s to the upper 60s. Highs Wednesday will range from a comfortable 70 in the north to near 80 in the central and near 90 in the south.

Stale PTA Meeting To Open Wednesday By HORTENSE MYERS United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPD-Several thousand women and a few men missing from their homes Wednesday and Thursday may be found in Evansville. They are delegates to the 47th annual convention of the Indiana Congress of Parents and Teachers, meeting for the first tiriie in 'the Pocket City. In addition to delegates from some 2,000 units of the huge school-concerned organization, rank and file members also attend as observers. Indications are that the conference will be a quiet one, with not even an election contest slated in advance. If such contests or differences of opinion develop, they will likely come during an opening Wednesday afternoon business meeting. Dr. Christian Jung will continue as president of the congress for one more year, but the second state vice president, two regional vice presidents, and six district directors will be named at this convention. 1960 Convemiton Site Also to be decided is the locale of the 1960 convention for which Fort Wayne is considered a leading contender. Candidates whose names were reported to the nominating committee before the convention opened included Dr. John J. Young, superintendent of Mishawaka city schools, for second vice president: Mrs. Robert Meshberger, Berne, vice president of the 4th region and Mrs. Orlin l ockridge, Evansville. 6th region vice president. Director nominees are Mrs. Willard Gentry, Dayton, Ind., 3c; Mrs. Ray Tibbets, Peru, 3D: HorMrs. Carl B. Eastes, Sellersburg, 6C; Mrs. Russell L. Bell, 6D, and Robert G. Cannon, Versailles, 7D The closing speaker Thursday night will be Dr. Lyman V. Ginger, dean of education at the University of Kentucky and immediate past president of the National Education Association. Mrs. Aaron E. Margulis, Santa Fe, N, M., a member of the board of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, and Circuit Judge Robert B. Stewart, of Brazil, are other major speakers. Men’s Dinner Set Although the ranks of men have increased sharply in PTA membership, not as many men will be able to attend the convention as housewives. However, a men’s dinner will be held Wednesday everting and Stewart is the speaker. ' Panel sessions covering the projects that most concern the PTA will fill much of the two-day program. Approval of a plan to increase the number of scholarships given by the Congress is expected to come out of the convention. The "batting average” of the organization in backing certain school measures in the 1959 Legislature will be assessed and legislative aims for the future considered. The PTA programs to improve the health of the pre-school child, to better school-community relations. afford more opportunities for the exceptional child, and to avert juvenile delinquency will be reviewed also. Arsonist Sought By Terre Haute Police TERRE HAUTE, Ind. Previously, two deliberate attempts to burn Terre Haute Wiley High School building were reported to firemen, one April 22 and the other five days later. noth i-: Notice is hereby given that The Decatur Memorial Foundation Inc. will hold its annual meeting Monday night, June I, at 7:30 o'clock p.m. at the Youth and Community Center Purpoae of the meeting is to elect directors, where there are vacancies and officers for the year 1958-1959.
