Francona Hits Pinch Home Run To Beat Yanks By MILTON RICHMAN * United Press International Jubilant Joe Gordon claims his Cleveland Indians "aren’t that good, but they think they are,’’ and now the Yankees even are beginning to think so, too. The Yankees got their first look at the Tribe Friday night and one look was enough. The Indians showed ’em some slick pitching by Cal McLish and some mighty potent bench strength in Tito Francona, who delivered a pinch three-run homer in the 10th inning to beat the slumping Bronx Bombers, 4-2.
Francona has driven in seven runs in five pinch hitting appearances this season. He smashed jbs homer with Rocky Colavito on third and Billy Martin on first after the Yanks had tied the score at 1-1 with two out in the ninth and then gone ahead, 2-1, in the top of the 10th on Tony Kubek’s run-producing single. Franeona’s blow came off Zack Monroe althouh Bobby Shar.tz was charged with the loss. Yankee starter Art Ditmar hielded only one hi*—£ fifth inning homer by Colavito-c ring the seven u.nings he worked. Records Third Straight* McLish hurled seven-ihit ball for his third straight win. The Indians' victory kept them a game ahead of the second-place White Sox, who nipped the Red Sox, 1-0. The Athletics moved into third place with a 6-3 triumph over the Orioles, and the Senators scored a 10-inning 4-3 victoiy over the toothless Tigers. In the National League, the Giants climbed to within a half game of first place with a 6-4 decision over the Braves: the Reds licked the Dodgers, 5-3; the Phillies beat the Cubs, 4-2, and the Cardinals topped the Pirates, 7-6. Early Wynn of die Red Sox gave up only one hit—a first inning single to Pete Runnels — struck out 14 batters and drove in the only run of the contest with an eighth-inning homer off Tom Brewer. It was the 252nd victory of Wynn’s career. Mim {eeujueßeMi&fc AMERICAN ASSOCIATION Eastern Division t W. L. Pet. GJ3. Jackets Whip Bluffton, B*l, In NEIC Tilt Decatur’s Yellow Jackets scored in every inning .to dump Bluffton from the undefeated rjanks, winning their third NEIC baseball game, 8-1, as Larry Daniel’s pitching and Bob Shraluka’s big bat paved the way Friday afternoon at Worthman Field. Decatur is now 3-1, while the Tigers are 2-1. Daniels flipped a neat two-hit-ter, missing a shut-out When first baseman Steve Lytle dropped a two-out pop up halfway between home and first with runners on second and third. Shraluka boosted his batting lead with three for four, adding two runs batted in to his teamhigh total. Daniels also contributed with the longest hit of the game, a screaming line triple to right center, in the sixth inning, scoring Jim Reidenbach, who had beat out a smash to deep short. Shraluka continued the scoring spree, lining one through the box to tally Daniels. Decatur took the lead in the first on a walk to Reidenbach, a wild pitch, and Shraluka’s first bingle, a dribbler between short and third. They added another in the second on two walks and an error, and two in the third on Terry Holtsberry’s two-run double to right. John Cowan walked after one out, stole second and third, and scored when Shraluka reached base for the third straight time on the shortstop’s boot of a routine ground ball. They added the sixth run in the fifth on two walks and Tom Grabill’s sacrifice bunt. The Jackets play at Portland Monday and Concordia plays here Wednesday. Coach Bill McColly’s team will tangle with a tough Columbia City team here Thursday. The Jackets now own a seasonal mark of 6-3 and remain in contention for the conference crown. x Bluffton AB R H S. Patterson Is Winner By K.O. In 11th Round
NEW YORK (UPI) — Heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson, fresh from his llth-round knockout over England’s Brian London, sounded die warning today, “I’ll be 100 per cent sharp for the big fiht in June.’’ Die 24-year-old champion from Rockville Center, N.Y., said “I was only 55 per cent of myseU against London last night and 25 per cent of myself last August against Roy Harris — but I’ll be 100 per cent against Inemar Johansson, in June.” & Floyd appeared ring-rusty Friday night at the Fair Grounds Coliseum although be gave the former British Empire champion such a lop-sided beating that only one rin official gave Brian a round. London, bleeding from his right cheek and the mouth, was counted out by referee Frank Sikora at 51 seconds of the 11th round, when the ame Englishman was cm the floor for the second time. In the 10th round a right to the chin had driven him to one knee, but the bell ending the round rang at the count of five. Will Receive Guarantee London will receive $60,000, plus trans-Atlantic expenses for his licking. London's guarantee comes out of Patterson’s total purse. Promoter A1 Farb announced a paid attendance of 10,068 and a gross gate of $122,885. The net gate Was 103,111. Patterson’s 60 per cent of the net gate was $61,866. He also receives the total TVradio fee of $175,000, iving him a total purse of $236,866. After paying London's $60,000 and expenses, he should wind up with approximately $170,000. Floyd’s fight with European champion Johansson at New York’s Yankee Stadium, June 25, is expected to draw a million-dol-lar gate. Although Floyd was far from sensational Friday night as he registered his 22nd straight victory and his fourth defense of the crown, he had the distinction of being the first man to knock ruged London off his feet. The challener weighed 208 pounds to the champion's 182V4. Staggering In Every Round „ Patterson had the artillery, but his eiht-months of inactivity since he knocked out Roy Harris last Aug. 18, made him miss the target often — particularly when he Went all-ovt with Sundaypunches in trying to put his man away. They grazed and they missed — and on two misses, the champion almost fell down.

Nevertheless, he gave darkhaired London a terrific beating, particularly to the body. And he had the iron man from Blackpool, England, staggering at least once in newly every round. The third session was London’s best. He knocked the champion back onto his heels with a “sneaker riht” to the chin and fought well, JL It was Flovd’s 22nd victory and Ids 34th in 35 fights.
