ICfeamed^n I Comments \Jm\ H On S.S...«XR i |^Lessonj£jggJ } The events of this lesson occurrj ed during David's maturity as man j and king. Under his leadership, ] Israel had attained a position of i power. The Philistines. Ammoni--1 tes and Syrians had been defeated, j No man, however, can rise so high 1 as to be beyond temptation and { David's moral lapse came at the * time his outward success was i greatest. The lesson deals with the | nature and consequences of sin, ' the necessity for honesty in facing | one’s sin, and God’s willingness to i forgive when there is sincere re- ; pentance. - j Vs.l-3. “And the Lord sent Naj than unto David. And -he came unto him, and said unto him, There r were two men in one city: the one * rich, and the other poor. .. The . ; rich man had exceeding many t glocks and herds:.. . But the poor '•man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought nourished up: and it grew up J together with him, and with his » children; it did eat of his own « meat, and drank of his own cup, z and lay in his bosom, and was unto j him as a daughter.” David had * seen and been attracted by Bath- | sheba, the wife of Uriah, one of his i thirty “mighty men” in the army. ? charged his monarch with shimeful. conscienceless adultery by means of a parable at the end of which the king convicts himself. It was dangerous to rebuke kings, particularly since David’s sin was not unusual among oriental monarchs. who ruled ruthlessly and took what they wanted. The ewe lamb was a common thing in a poor man’s home of that day. To seize the one pet lamb of a poor man would arouse anger and resentment in any just man. Vs. 4-6. “And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wr.yfaring man that was come unto him; but took the poor man’s lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come unto him. .. And David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the Lord liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die:. . . And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.” In the parable, the rich man, of course, represented David and the poor man Uriah, who had one wife, Bathsheba. In contrast, David had many wifes and concubines. David did not recognize himself as the culprit in the parable but his sense of justice was aroused and he stated the culprit should be killed and restoration made. The damage done by David, however, was irreparable. V 5.7,9,10. “And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;. . . Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his sight? 'Dtou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. . . Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.” Nathan spoke courageously concerning God’s judgment regarding David's willful transgression. He interpreted David’s sin as more than brutal sin against the soldier, Uriah; he had broken the law of God. While l\e had not actually killed Uriah himself, he was responsible for his death. God did not want David to be free from condemnation because he had been his anointed.
