18 Horses Are Nominated For Kentucky Derby LOUISVILLE, Ky. (UPD — All Derby Town puzzled today over Calumet Farm's reentry into the Kentucky Derby but the professional horsemen on the backstretch were more concerned with the size of the field. “If On-And-On starts, I’ll bet him,” was heard over and over throughout the city, even though trainer Jimmy Jones admitted there is a good chance his colt will not start. Jones said he was reluctant to give up a chance to win a third straight Kentucky Derby and wanted to "buy” 48‘additional hours in which to reach a decision. f Since he released Steve Brooks wno does most of the riding for Calumet. Jones did not have a jockey for On-And-On. He denied a report he had contacted Ismae\ Valenzuela, who subbed for injured Willie Hartack a year ago and won with Tim Tam. Another stable had been in touch with Valenzuela but later changed its mind. Explains Action Why, after saying the colt “wasn’t seasoned enough” for the Derby, did he change his mind? "1 didn't like his workout the, other day and decided to take him out,” Jones explained. “Then I saw the complete workout list and nobody had a good work. And when he was so firsky Thursday morning I decided to put him back in.” , The entry of On-And-On raised the field to 18 starters and many trainers worried about its size. “You have to worry about it,” said J. H. (Casey) Hayes who trains the favored First Landing for Christopher T. Chenery. “My horse has enough speed to stay out of any .trouble at the start but some of ’the others don’t. You don't knock another man’s horse but we both know the one you are talking about when you bring tip some pretty rough characters in it.” One of the “rough characters is Open View who can wander all over a race track. Others Bad Actors Atoll, running mate for Open View in the 85th Kentucky Derby and one who very easily could go to the front at the start, has no lily-whiie record either, Tomy Lee, second choice in the second richest of all Derbies, had a habit of going wide On the turns as a juvenile. Our Dad is another “bad actor.' But steward Lincoln Plaut was I not concerned with the possibility of a rough race. “Just look back over the record and you will see the Kentucky Derby down through the years has been a very cleanly run race,” he said. “We had Jimmy Stout fall off Granville at the start but we never have had a boy knocked off during the race, “As for trouble this year, I don’t think we will have any. It’s : up to the jockeys to control their horses and I think they can. Plan Archery Shoot At Range On Sunday The Limberlost archery and conservation club will hold a standard field round shoot Sunday at the outdoor range two miles west of Decatur on U.S. 224 and ¥< mile south on the first road of the Erie crossing. Reds Observe May Day With Show Os Might United Presg International Communist troops and leaders around the world gathered today for shows ot armed might and speeches denouncing Western “militarism*’ and “intervention.” In Moscow, a seven-minute milirival May Day; demonstrations. In Communist China, a mayor called on the West to “stop all" the dirty activities in Tibet.” In past years the military section of the Moscow parade has been a showcase of Communist military might Today ft was a tokeii display arid despite brilliant warm weather, no aircraft were flown overhead and there were no tanks Picked units of all the armed services, in white gloves and knee-length boots, goose - stepped past Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, Vice Premier Anastas Mikoyan and other members of the ruling Presidium. The military weapons were confined to rocket" launchers, antiaircraft guns, field guns and amphibious personnel carriers. Even a 10-minute speech by Marshal Rodion Malinovsky, the defense minister, was devoted mainly to glorifying the achievements and promises of the sevenyear plan aimed at out-stripping America economically. Almost in passing he attacked “mltag circles fl the \ Western powers” for ‘/opposing the peace moves of the Soviet Union in every possible way.” Goose-stepping Communist East German troops paraded in East Berlin in defiance of four-power agreements at a rally held to demand the Western Allies leave the city.' The troops were followed by the Communist workers militia, a group of armed Soviet-zone workers. This also was in violation of four-power agreements. A mile away in West Berlin hundreds of thousands of West Berliners gathered at the Platz’ Der Republic to show their determination to remain free. They heard an American pledge to stand by, them. Walter Reuther, president ol the United Automobile Workers, told the West Berlin rally the United States would back their stand no matter how strong and how cold the Soviet wind blows from the East. West Berlin Mayor Willy Brandt said:.. “We are only a few million people and we have no weapons. But we have a right to live and to work. We want to live and work in freedom. We will not allow this right to be taken from us. We will never change this stand, come what may." ■' - .

"Common sense indicates that the good will and support which the rest of the Senate has given will not be forthcoming from the subcommittee chairman,” her letter said. “A continuing harassment of my mission, with a view to making his own charges stick, is the natural course the chairman would follow. "And the sad fact is not that I, but Brazilian - American policy would be the victim.” Mrs. Luce concluded that it was "indisputable” that at a time of "grave economic difficulties in Brazil” the best interests of both nations would be served by the choice of another ambassador. “Again, I regret with all my heart that I will not have the opportunity to be of this service to you, to our country and to interAmerican relaions,” she said. Mrs. Luce also wrote that the mission to Brazil would be a

"delicate one” and that it would be necessary for the American ambassador to work "in a climate of reasonable good will and bipartisan support.” Eisenhower, at his news conference Wednesday, had given Mrs. Lace a warm note of confidence and said he saw no reason why she should resign. He said he did not think her usefulness as ambassador to Brazil had been impaired as result of her feud with Morse. Morse had attacked her for past political campaign speeches in which she charged that the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt "Lied us into war.” He also challenged her competence for the job. Shortly after the Senate confirmed her nomination, she said in New York that her difficulties with Morse began when he was “kicked in the head by a horse” several years ago. Eisenhower said Wednesday that the remark may have been “illadvised” but that it was "perfectly human” for her to have reacted that way.
