Steady Improvement In Business Foreseen BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (UP!)— An Indiana University economist predicted today that business in the Hoosier state will improve steadily through 1959 and that inflation will be nothing to worry about. “The state as a whole can anticipate a strong upward thrust of business activity that should carry well beyond the limits of 1959,” John P. Lewis said in the current issue of "Indiana Business Review.” Lewis said a steel strike could interrupt the advance of income in the northern part of Indiana

and the year promises to be less satisfactory for farmers than 1958. Nevertheless, he said, the state’s deeper-than-average recession is almost Sure to mean a greater-tnan-average expansion during tHe current year. Private non-farm residential construction has been the frontrunner among the private de[mands aiding recovery, he said, and it shows no signs of an im mediate relapse. “Consumer durables purchases may well turn out to be the sleeper in the 1959 business expansion,” Lewis said. “Automobile spring sales have picked up smartly and moreover, appliances, furniture and other durables, long comparatively sluggish in retail, have begun to generate some very cheerful sales reports this spring.” Anxiety about price inflation, he said, makes no sense. “Federal government purchases are rising sharply throughout the present fiscal year and it is unrealistic to expect them to come down any after July 1,” he said. “State and local government spending will continue its steady rise to meet the increasing needs for more and better local public facilities and services. Plant and equipment spending is now firmly established on an upward course." Larry Andrews Named Association Officer Larry Andrews, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Andrews, route one, Decatur, was recently elected treasurer of the Indiana Central College ministerial association for 1959-60. Andrews is in his junior year at ICC, where he is a pre-minis-terial student, and was a 1953 graduate of Monmouth high school. He is a member of the Trinity EUB church in Decatur.
