Sunny Skies Easing State Flood Threat United Pres* International Sunny skies today ended three days of rain in Indiana and brightened the prospects for relatively minor floods along Hoosier streams now overflowing for the third time this year. At Wabash, the Wabash River spurted nearly 10 feet above flood stage, driving a few families from their homes. But the crest arrived at 21.9 feet late Tuesday night and the river level had dropped to 21.65 this morning. The situation at Wabash appeared to have been less serious than orginally was expected. The weathermen bad anticipated the possibility of a 23-foot crest. The Wabash and White and numerous smaller streams continued to rise at some points but were falling in the headwaters after rains stopped Tuesday. At Anderson, the White River crested at 11.86 feet early this morning and the level had dropped an inch or so a few hours later. A crest of 12 to 13 feet had been anticipated. Temperatures dipped into the Chilly 40’s as the moist air swept out of Hoosierland after dumping up to six inches of rain on some areas. The rain concentrated on the upper Wabash River valley across north central Indiana, as it did in February when major floods hit the area. It was 43 at Evansville. 4f at Indianapolis and 47 at Fort Wayne this morning after highs ranging from 60 at Fort Wayne to 67 at Evansville Tuesday. Sunny and warmer weather was due today, partly cloudy and mild Thursday, and partly cloudy and warmer Friday. There was no indication of more rain through the three-day period. The five-day outlook indicated precipitation for the period ending next Monday will total about' haH an inch in showers mainly during the weekend. Temperatures during the fiveday period will average 2 to 4 degrees above normal highs of 63 to 72 and normal lows of 41 to 52. “Warm throughout period, probably turning cooler about Monday.” the outlook said. Highs today will, range from 66 to the mid 70s, lows tonight from the mid 40s to the low 50s, and highs Thursday in the 70s. Shelbyville Votes Salary Increases SHELBYVILLE, Ind. Handley and several Hoosier mayors have issued proclamations requesting observance of the week. Special observances are planned in the 80 soil conservation districts in the state by churches and civic groups, Cole said. Cole described 1958 as the “best year” in the history of soil conservation in Indiana. The year saw completion of organization and activities of three soil conservation districts and within the last few months two additional districts have been organized. The past year was marked with field days, land judging contests, state -fair and other-exhibits, contour com contests and district and area meetings and workshops. County agricultural agents port that some 42,400 persons received direct or indirect assistance in adopting recommended conservation practices. The soil *" conservation service reports 3.002 new district cooperators. bringing the 1958 total to 14,155. Nearly 1,000 basic conservation plans were completed. Standard soil surveys were completed on 723.126 acres and soil conservation surveys were made on 54,988 acres. In a year of floods, watershed planning on 21 watersheds covering 1.248.760 acres was reported in progress.
