The Jackets got seven hits, scoring two runs in the first and four in the third inning for the win. Besides Daniels, who also collected a single in his four trips, the. Jacket fritting was well distributed. Huntington scored its lone run in the last inning on a peculiar play. A line shot by pinph-hitte®. Wetters, and a single by .third baseman Burnwbrth started off the inning. Left fielder Harris then sent a grass-cutter to Steve Lytle, who booted it to Larry. Ritter. Ritter threw to the plate , too late to get the charging Wet--1 ters. Shraluka then fired to Reid* enbach at third, nailing Burnworth. The red head then fired to Ritter + who tagged Harris trying for second. Bowman ended the ball game bouncing to Daniels. who flipped to Lytle. Mathews Hits Two Homers To Beat Redlegs • By MILTON RICHMAN United Press International Lucky thing Eddie Mathews didn't go out and burn his bat after the World Series because right now it’s kindling Milwali- | kee’s hopes for a third straight National League pennant. I No one would have blamed Mathews much if he tossed that piece of lumber in the fire after last fall. It didn't do him much I good in the series with the Yan|kees against whom he struck out II times. “I had a lousy year all around,” he reflected, bearing in mind the .251 average he slumped to last season. "This year will be a lot different, though.” Mathews offered a fair sample of what he meant Friday night when he blasted Iwo home runs, one with the bases idjded. to lead Milwaukee to a 16*7 victory over Cincinnati. The two homers boosted Mathews’ season total to six, helped the Braves retain first place and gave them their 37th triumph in the last 45 meetings with their Cincinnati “cousins.” Mathews Tees Off Trailing, 6-2, at one point, the Reds pulled to within one run of the Braves only to have Mathews tee off on rookie Jim O’Toole fcr his grand-slam wallop in the eighth. O'Toole is a left-hander, but Mathews didn’t play favorites. He hit his first homer off righthander Don Newcombe, the loser, in the fourth inning. Joey Jay was the winner although he required relief from Don McMahon. Joe Adcock also homered for the Braves while Gus Bell hit two for the Reds and Frank Thomas and Roy McMillan each had one. The second-place Dodgers remained a half-game behind the Braves by beating the Cardinals, 3-2, in 10 innings; the Pirates defeated the Phillies, 8-5, and the Giants edged the Gubs, 4-3, in 11 innings. Y Over in the American League, the astounding Indians increased their lead to 3% games by whipping the White Sox, 6-4, for their 10th victory in 11 starts; the Athletics handed the Tigers their 10th loss in 11 games, 10-1, and the Red Sox downed the Senators, 7-2. The Yankees and Orioles were not scheduled. Duke Hits A Single Duke Snider's pinch single in the 10th drove in the winning run for the Dodgers, who sent the Cards down to their 10th loss in 13 games. Gene Green sent the, game into extra innings with a homer in the ninth off southpaw Johnny Podres, who was credited with his second win. Smokey Burgess’ two-run double featured a four-run rally in the ninth that gave the Pirates an uphill victory over the Phillies. Victims of Pittsburgh’s rally were loser Al Schroll and Dick Farrell. Reliever Elroy Face picked up his second victory. Dick Stuart and Wally Post hit homers. There are 10 covered bridges in the state of Maine which are more than a century old. THE DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT, DECATUR. INDIANA

Work Is Started On New Athletic Field Inclement weather curtailed initiation of work on Decatur Catholic's new athletic plant at HannaNuttman park this morning as only a skeleton volunteer crew was on hand to work on the infield. Plans made Friday night at the booster club meeting at the Knights of>Columbus hall called for a mass moving of high ground to the infield, but heavy rains during the night and early morning forced a postponement. About 16 members took shovels in hand to replace broken drain tiles, and ether menial tasks today, in lieu of the cancellation of the heavy equipment operation. The Rev.- Robert Jaeger, athletic director, presided at last night’s meeting, where plans were voiced of construqting a backstop and fence around the baseball playing area. Estimates of fence cost were presented, with a plan to build a permanent strip 150 feet parallel to each base line from the baekstop. A temporary two-wire strand fence around the perimeter of the baseball playing area will also be built to alleviate any possibility of destruction to the planning improvements. In the past, horses and cars have been known to roam what will now be the outfield. A fund raising project to contact all former pupils of the school was tabled in favor of opening the school's athletic fund to meet necessary expenses. The Decatur Lions club gave $50.00 to the fund. The problem of drainage was also considered with various members discussing how to curtail “wet spots’’in the infield. The consensus vas to build the infield crown in such away to carry off most of the water, rather than rely solely on tile drainage. The tile drainage will be used to complement the high crowned infield. The temporary executive board will meet later this week to outline further assignments to carry on the improvement project.
