Ray Bluth Is Winner Os Masters Tourney ST. LOUIS (UFI -Ray Bluth. who has been something of a bridesmaid but never a bride in the matter of winning a national individual bowling tournament, could relax today. Bluth, a member of the famed Budweiser team of St. Louis, captured the ninth annual American Bowling .Congress Masters Tournament Wednesday night, outclassing an original field of 380 great bowlers. Prior to his Masters victory, Bluth had never been able tjo capture a major individual tide. He was second in this same masters meet in 1956, losing to Dick Hoover, and just a raw months ago finished second in the all-star tournament behind Billy Welu, . also of St. Louis. , Bluth has shared national honors, such as in 1956 when he and Dick Weber were the two- man champions, and his Budweiser team has won three national titles in the last four years with Bluth in the lineup. He didn't have an easy time in taking the Masters title. Although he went into the title round unbeaten, he. dropped three straight games to Billy Golembiewski of Detroit and trailed by 28 pins starting the finale. The came a series of breaks, all good for Bluth. Golembiewski drew the 7-10 split in the fifth frame of the fourth game. Bluth quickly hit two good strikes but needed another to take the lead. On his next roll, Bluth hit the left side of the No. 1 pin, known as the Brooklyn side in bowling, -but stiH carried a strike. In the next frame, he left a tough spare, missing the headpin completely. He picked up the spare but only with a lucky break. One pin appeared to be left standing before finally toppling over into the gutter. This series of breaks allowed Bluth to win the big match, 827817, and his first major individual title. He picked up $1,210 in prize money, a trophy almost as big as he is, a wrist watch and prestige with the.victory. Bluth averaged 218 in marching over seven opponents for the highest average ever scored by a Masters champion. John Powell Jr., Toledo, Ohio, however, set a record when he bowled 28 games at a 219 average in the finals before being eliminated. Orders Robinson To Defend Title NEW YORK (UPI (—Sugar Ray Robinson, pinned against the legal ropes by the double attack of a New York state judge and the National Boxing Association, was in grave danger today of losing his world middleweight championship. Robinson, who never has defended the crown he won last year from Carmen Basilio, was told Wednesday by state Supreme Court Judge Saul Streit that he must sign within 15 days to defend against Basilio or risk being stripped of the crown. And the NBA, which rules boxing in states other than New York indicated it will take the title from tiie “Sugar Man” unless be signs by midnight this Saturday. Just how Robinson would react to these twin threats, as dangerous as any he ever faced in the ring, wasn’t being made clear either by Robinson or by his handlers. One source reported the champion defiant, daring both New York and the NBA to do their worst, but Robinson, busy with funeral arrangements for his sister, wasn't making any public statements. There was some chance that Robinson would meet the deadlines by agreeing this week to a defense against Basilio. He already has held several conferences with Madison Square Garden boxing officials on the subject. Judge Streit slapped the new deadline on Robinson in handing down a decision in a court proceeding brought by Robinson. The champion had asked the court to stop the New York State Athletic Commission from fulfilling this threat to vacate his title unless he signed for a defense against Basilio. Streit upheld the' right of the commission to set a time limit on a champion and to name a suitable opponent. “Otherwise,” he ruled, “a champion could freeze his title indefinitely by selecting inferior opponents for his defense of that title.” The First Baptist Church of Providence, R. 1., houses the oldest Baptist congregation in the nation. It was established in 1638 by Roger Williams and other early settlers.
