Families With FHA Plan 1959 Farming Adams county farmer* who borrow from the Farmers Home Administration have completed making their farming plans for this year. And many are already putting new ideas into operation which should boost their 1959 farm income, Donald A. Norquest, the agency’s local county supervisor, said this week. Among the more common improved practices adopted, in this area are having soil samples tested and following the recommendations made by Purdue as a result of these tests. Also, many are applying nitrogen after the corn crop is up and being cultivated. The practice of spraying with chemicals to control weeds has come into wide use during the last few years, too. Besides these newer practices, borrowers of this agency are encouraged to keep dairy herds on test, provide quality roughage to keep feed costs down and rotate pastures at frequent intervals. It is more efficient to pasture a small area intensely for a short time then pasture another area while the first area makes new growth than to let the herd roam over the entire field all the time. During the past three months FHA borrowers have analyzed their 1958 farm and home records. These records showed what had been planned and what had been accomplished. On the basis of the records the families were able to determine the strong and weak points in their operations and recognize further improvements that could be made in their operations. Good farm management is a major step in the borrowers’ program to repay FHA then get all their necessary financing from local banks or cooperative lenders.
14-Month-Old Boy Is Choked On Bean INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) —Michael E. Isenberg, 14 months old, died Wednesday in a hospital after choking on a bean. The boy was the son of the Veachel Isenbergs of Indianapolis. Monroeville FFA Tops In Contest The Monroeville Future Farmers of America won top state honors in the 1958-59 Dekalb corn achievement contest by scoring 503 out of a possible 505 points. Those receiving plaques for outstanding results were Joe Castleman, Dan Gerardot, Jim Castleman, Edwin Castleman and Ross Bowen. Edwin Castleman led the group with 143 bushels per acre. His gross income was $140.63 and his expenses were $55.40, leaving a net profit of $85.23 per acre. His cost of production was 39 cents per bushel; his plant population was 16,000 per acre. The Monroeville students raised this corn as a vocational agriculture project. Cletus Heimann, formerly from Decatur,’vocational agriculture instructor, helped the students check the corn several times during the growing season for stand, disease and insect damage and mineral deficiencies. At harvest time, a portion of the field was hand picked and weighed. A moisture test was taken and the yield calculated. Others completing the project were Robert Hart, Eddie Gerardot, Harold Klinker, Merlin Adams, Larry Cagnet and Ralph Klinker.
