Montreal Canadiens Take Fourth Title MONTREAL (UPD—The Montreal Canadiens, hockey’s most powerful and colorful exponents, reigned as world champions for the fourth consecutive year today and Coach Toe Blake called it the “sweetest one of them all.” The Canadiens, playing without their two brightest stars—Maurice (Rocket) Richard and Jean Beliveau — wrapped up an unprecedented fourth straight Stanley Cup championship Saturday nifcht, defeating the game but “secondbest” Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-3. It took the Canadiens just five games of the best-of-seven series to clinch the title. Paced by Bernie (Boom-Boom) Geoffrion’s two goals and one by his rj|pkie linemate, Ralph Backstrom, the habitants jumped off to a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes and then increased the margin to 5-1 after two periods. The valiant Leafs, struggling desperately to avert elimination, saved the finale from being a dull affair with a furious last period onslaught. They scored twice to narrow the score to 5-3 and then threw six forwards at- the habitants in the final 2.33 in a vain but dramatic climax tb the series. “This h«» to be the greatest team yet," said Blake, obviously moved by the showing of his hustling heroes. “We had to do it the hard way—without the big guys.” Boros And Burke In Playoff At Houston HOUSTON, Tex. (UPD — Easygoing Julius Boros, a Connecticut Yankee now living in Florida and playing out of North Carolina, met comeback specialist Jackie Burke Jr. today in an 18-hole playoff for top moneyup the Houston Classic golf tournarneSWThe two strongmen both overcame front-running Arnold Palmer in Saturday’s final round of the $30,000 Classic at Memorial Park to end up in a tie for first place with 11-under-par 2775. Palmer, who had been co-fa-vored with Cary Middlecoff to win this 12th annual event, faded during the final 27 holes to efld up in a tie for third place with Mike Souchak of Grossinger, N.Y., with a 278. The third-place tie netted Souchak and Palmer $1,850 each. Today’s playoff was the first of the current season, and only the second for the Houston Classic since it was started in 1947. Palmer’s bogey five on Sunday’s 18th and final hole may have cost him as much as $2,450. He came « into the 18th at even par for the day and another par for the hole would have put him in a threeway tie for first and another chance' at the $4,300 top money. Second-place money is $3,000. The Ligonier, Pa., long-hitter drove his second shot six feet beyond the green, chipped towithin five feet of the cup and then missed his putt by inches to take the bogey. < Middlecoff pocketed $1,400 by coming in for a three-way tie for fourth at 279 with Chick Harbert of Northville, tylich., and Freddie Haas of New Orleans. Billy Maxwell of Odessa, Tex., and Jay Hebert of Sanford, Fla., tied at 280 for eighth place and netted $1,150 each.
