Kennedy was both impressed with Decatur and impressing tn the people of Decatur in his appearance Monday night at the Community Center. He explained that he had expected a small town with a handful of people at a meeting out in the country. Instead, after a trip through a beautiful landscape from the airport, he was greeted in Decatur by more than ' 500 persons in a modern community center in the midst of a busy industrial city. In turn, the handsome 42-year-old senator distinct- , ly impressed his audience. He left no doubt in his rapidfire, intelligent answer to questions, after the speech, that he was a level-headed thinker who did not mince words or time, but gave his opinion flatly without fear or favor. His friendliness in signing autographs and shaking hands with everyone who could get near him, and his-overwhelming modesty impressed the people attending. The politicians who met him were even more impressed with his complete honesty, quick answers, and commanding energy. ‘ ' Decatur can certainly be proud. Not only was an outstanding speech, full of interest, and delivered extremely well presented in a short time, but national attention was drawn to the community by the wire services and by the New York Times. The dinner was one of the smoothest for the Democrats ever staged in Indiana. It started promptly. Serving was extremely good, and every meal was hot when served. Richard Linn, and all the ladies and men who labored at the Community Center, are to be Complimented for the terrific show which everyone enjoyed. Mrs. “William Gass did a fine job on the organ during the dinner. . 'Robert H. Heller and Mayor Robert D. Cole both did very capable jobs as master of ceremonies and host mayor respectively. The committees functioned perfectly, and nearly everyone who attended left the meeting pleased. Dr. Harry H. Hebble was a gracious host, taking personal care of his guest both ways. The Democratic party of Adams county has a right to be proud of the dinner, and of their guest. Whether he is nominated for high office, or continues his job as one of the nation’s finest senators, the party has brought an outstanding thinker and speaker to this < community, focusing the national spotlight, if even for / ;a very short time, on our city.
