Social Security Quiz Answers Many Queries

(Editor’* note: Do you have any questions about Social Security? We all do, don’t we? Send any question you might have to Social Security Quiz, c/o Daily Democrat. You'll find your answer in this column, which is published each Saturday.) 1. Q—-We hawe a small church without too much money. Our only employe, besides the minister, is an old janitor who has been with us many years. We haven't the money to care for him when he retires. Is there any way he can get social security benefits? A— Your church is exempt from -social security taxes as a non-profit organization. If the church authorities and the employe want social security coverage, contact the Director of Internal Revenue. If your church files a certificate in which it gives up its examption from social security taxes, and your janitor wants to be covered, he would then start earning social security credits toward retirement. i. have been the only support for my sister since her son died 12 months ago. She has been a widow for 30 years. Her son never married. Now I’m retiring. Can she draw social security benefits on my record? A—No. There is no provision for dependent sisters. However, there is a possibility of her drawing benefits as a dependent parent on her son’s record. Contact the nearest social security office right away about parent’s benefits. 3. Q —As I was born July 19,1888, I’ve been told only 6 quarters of social security credit to be eligible for social security benefits. If my first social security employment is from July. 1, 1958 through December 31, 1959, at $l5O a month, how much would the benefit be? A—s 34. Although 5 years after 1950 can be dropped in figuring your benefits the wages must still be divided over 4 years, 1956-1959. This results in a relatively low benefit. 4. Q —What is the benefit formula for social security benefits under the 1958 Amendments? A—There is no formula. The 1959 law provides a benefit table which shows the benefits starting in 1959. In the table all benefits payable are based on the average monthly earnings of the worker. 5. Q —l am a teacher who came under social security the first time in 1955. Although I am over 65 years old, I plan to continue teaching. During June, July and August, however, I will not be earning anything. Could I.receive my benefits for those months even though I receive payment in them? A—Yes. The Social Security Law says that you can' receive your benefits after you are of retirement age for any month in which you neither earn more than SIOO or render substantial services in self employment, regardless of how much you earn during the en-tire-year. 6. Q—When I am ready to retire should I bring my social security account number card with me? A—Yes, by presenting your acconut number card you will assist in the speedy completion of your claim for benefits. If you have lost your account number card, you should apply immediately for a duplicate. 7. Q—Last year at age 60 I start-

ed drawing disability insurance benefits. I resumed limited work and may earn over SI2OO this year. Will I lose my disability benefits by earning over $1200? A— No. The SI2OO limitation applies to old age and survivors benefits, not to disability benefits. But the real question is whether or not you have overcome your disability sufficiently to do substantial work. The amount of earnings is only one factor. We would suggest that you visit your social security office and ask them about your status. Coming Attractions At Adams Theater The Adams theater has the distinction of presenting the first Indiana showing Sunday and Monday of the double feature combination “Daddy-O” and “Road Racers.” “Daddy-O", a story of the rock and, roll generation stars the famous singer and accordian player Dick Contino and Sandra Giles. “Road Racers” tells of a reckless driver who makes a thrilling comeback after being barred from American tracks. Much of the picture is actually filmed at the United State Grand Prix races. Two of the funniest pictures ever made will be brought back to the Adams next Friday and Saturday to give the public three hours of much-needed laughs. They are Marjorie Main in “The Kettles on Old MacDonald’s Far m” and “Francis inthe Navy,” with Donald O’Connor and Francis, the talking mule. Birds and crocodiles are the closest living . ratatives of the dinosaurs that ruled the earth about 130 million years ago, according to the National Geographic Magazine.
