More than 1200 boxes of candy were sold by the members of Central’s four bands. Individual first - place winners are: beginners’ band,
Ron Smith, 122 boxes: intermediate, Maris Moeschberger, 24; junior, Joan Brown, 76; and senior, Donna Shoaf, 62. Those coming in second in their respective bands were Linda Rich, 87; Rebecca Soldner, 15; Mervin Mann, 28; and Gyneth Schnepp, 20. These people who placed first will receive either a record-player or a radio. —A.C.H.S.— “Sharpened wits,” as well as sharpened pencils, were present last Wednesday as the seniors wrote for the I.Q. tests. Time was given in the senior sociology classes for this test, which will determine the seniors’ mental capacity. (?) —A.C.H.S.— This Saturday, the Sunshine society will locate its bake sale in Monroe. Stucky’s store will be the place and the time is set for 9-11 a.m. So, let's see everyone there to purchase some pies, cakes, cookies, cupcakes, hom e-made noodles, etc. —A.C.H.S.— Rise and “Play!” This could well be the motto of the band;, for last Tuesday morning, bright and early, Central’s musicians came to school an hour early to practice for the band and chorus contest. Chorus members heard the early call Wednesday morning. - A.C.H.S.— Last Friday during club period the Sunshine Society girls chose their 1959-60 officers. Receiving the honor of president was Delora Mishler, junior. Vice president for next year will be Onalee Barkley, junior. Dixie Smith, junior, will be treasurer. 1958-59 officers are president Carol Haggard; Delora Mishler, vice president; Mary Dick, treasurer; Jeannie Smith, recording secretary; and Sandy Strickler, corresponding secretary. -A.C.H.S.— Jim. Hoffman has earned the title of valedictorian of Central’s 1959 graduating class, as announced by principal Herman Frantz. Salutatorian was named as Bill Hoffman. Coming close behind, in four-year averages, were Jerry L. Gerber, Shirley Osterman and Wanda Neuenschwander. Congratulations, Jim and Bill! —A.C.H.S.— Wednesday morning Central’s senior band traveled to Monmouth to listen and to judge the Monmouth band in intonation, tone quality, balance, musicianship, showmanship, and technique. In return, the Monmouth band Journeyed to Central Thursday morning to judge AC’s musicians. and the Huntington lad, as well as contestants from Marion, Muncie, Fort Wayne, and Anderson, will compete in the April 5 regional meet at Huntington. Congratulations. Steve! Your fellow classmates are pulling for you. —D.C.H.S.— Fourteen D.C.H.S. students will participate in regional contests of the Indiana high school achievement program Saturday. Starting at 9:30 a.m. at Fort Wayne Cen-
tral Catholic high, the tests are expected to last at least three hours. Students will enter in one of three divisions—mathematics, Latin or English. Good luck, kids! -D.C.H.S.At a special assembly at D.C.H.S., students were delighted to hear Brother Robert Eymard, C.S.C., speak on "Vocations.” A representative of the Holy Cross Brothers, Brother Eymard gave the students a comprehensive report on the life and work of the Crosier Brothers. Stating that “All (vocations) lead to God," Brother Eymard emphasized the roll that prayer and the reception of the sacraments plays in finding one’s vocation. —D.C.H.S.— Jack Hurst, conservation agent for Adams county, spoke to a combined high school and junior high group last Friday. To the same group he showed a film which was redolent of wild life. Very colorful and enjoyable, the film story centered around the life of wild pheasant. —D.C.H.S.— Those students who pledged a half hour adoration period tonight are reminded to keep their appointments. —D.C.H.S.— An invitation to attend a meeting at St. Joseph’s school was extended to all parents of pupils in the first up to and including the fourth grade. The purpose of this meeting of March 24 was to promote better understanding between parent and teacher and to explain the school’s objectives and the means to attain them. Teachers were glad to get such a big response from the parents. —D.C.H.S.— Did you ever realize how much work went into making a juniorsenior prom a success? D.C.H.S. juniors are just beginning to realize all that is involved when planning for such an event. Scheduling May 14 as the night for the festive occasion, the juniors have selected a theme and are making preparations for decorating. Secrecy, of course, must prevail until the “unveiling” on the May evening. Coach Al Lindahl will be the class sponsor. —D.C.H.S.— After partaking of a savory meal, a group of more than 200 satisfied persons listened contentedly as Emil (Red) Sitko delivered a talk at the third annual Decatur Catholic high school basketball banquet. Receiving varsity awards for efforts put into the sport were; Paul Gross and Glenn Wilder, jackets and co-captain stars. The excitement around D. H. S. this week is in the preparation for the American Legion oratorical contest finals. This conest is being held at Decatur for thesecond straight year, I
which is quite an honor for Decatur. —D.H.S.— “Spring Swing” is the name of the dance which will be sponsored by the speech class Thursday night. The dance is only one of the ways in which the finalists of the contest will be entertained in their stay at Decatur. The dance will be held at the Center from nine to eleven. Tickets are being sold by members of the speech class for 25 cents each and will cost 30 cents at the door. —D.H.S.— A hospitality committee with Ann Kocher as chairman will be in charge of entertaining the speech finalists. Thursday a tour around Decatur is being planned and a few other interesting tours. —D.H.S.— Reminder to the juniors! Be sure to get your money into the office by the end of this week for the merit scholarship test. This test will be given next month; and unless your money has been paid, you are not eligible for the test. —D.H.S.— The D-club sponsored the dance held at the Center last Friday night. This dance was held to earn money for the D-club banquet which will be held soon. Thanks to the boys for a nice dance. —D.H.S.— Last Thursday afternoon the
awiters of D.H.S. were invited to tour the General Electric plant The group gathered in the dining hall before the tour started. George Laurent gave the group an idea of the products made in the Decatur plant and also congratulated D.H.S. on its sectional championship. The seniors really enjoyed this interesting tour and learned many things they did not know. The seniors wish to thank the General Electris for this tour. —D.H.S.— Friday begins the Easter vacation for D.H.S. and lasts through Monday. Tuesday the school will resume classes as usual. S. — Anyone who was in the vicinity of the science room about ten days ago probably smelled quite an offensive chemistry students were making hydrogen sulfide (“rotten egg") gas and many surprised squeals were heard when some unsuspecting person entered the northern portion of the lower hall. - M. H. S. — Freshmen visitation day is Monday, March 30, All students who plan to attend M.H.S. next year are urged to be present. The prospective students will take aptitude tests as well as prognstic examinations for algebra and foregin lanuage. We think this program is very good, for it aids the student in his choice of classes. - M. H. S. — Congratulations to die F.F.A. are in order! Ten members and two adults journeyed to Spiceland, where an honor citation was presented to them. Again we say, congratulations! — M. H. S. — Students have been selected from the various departments of the school to represent Monmouth high fb the regional evaminations at Bluffton Saturday. These examfiiations are given annually and students receiving high ratings then have the opportunity to take the state examination at Indiana University, Bloomington. H. S. — Fifth and sixth graders recently journeyed to Decatur for a field trip where they visited the newly remodeled library. This trip, it is reported, was a very interesting and educational experience. — M. H. S. - Something new has been added! A new portable electric voice amplifier has been purchased by the athletic department. This purchase was made instead of donating money from that department to die band. The explanation of this is that the band, during marching season, will find this gadget to be a very useful implement and the athletic department, during track season, will also be able to make use of this amplifier. — M. H. S. - Our ‘‘car of the week” for this week is a 1946 Chevrolet.
