Third Street Decatur, Ind. 66 3t Defense Department Roundly Criticized WASHINGTON iUPI) — T h e Defense Department was under < angry congressional criticism to- ; day for its secrecy on the Project Argus high altitude atomic blasts and other military matters. Rep. Melvin Price (D-IU.) chair- ■ man of the Senate-House atomic research subcommittee, accused the Pentagon of “unnecessary suppression” of information on the atomic explosions wMcH took place 300 miles above the South Atlantic last August and September. Price said he joined with Sen. Clinton P. Anderson (D-N. M.), chairman of the congressional Atomic Energy Committee, in charging the department leaked details of the tests to newspapers while “gagging” the committee. The Argus project was one of the best kept U. S. military sec-F rets since the World War II atomic bomb development. Deputy Defense Secretary Donald A. Quarles said no unusual secrecy measures were taken because “everybody participating in classified work is expected to maintain secrecy.” In a separate development, the House information subcommittee said the Air Force's refusal to give Congress a secret report on its ballistic missile program was a “step toward despotism.” It said the taxpayers would have to spend “120,000 to duplicate the report. Teen-ager Is Held For Murdering Two WYNONA, Okla. (UPD—A light flickering in pre - dawn darkness today led to the arrest of teenaged stayer Jerry Miller, in a barn near where he murdered two persons and wounded three others Thursday night. Miller, 19, emerged from the barn with his hands up when Osage County Sheriff Dick Streetman and a volunteer deputy, Henry Stephenson, demanded that he surrender or face their gunfire. Streetman said Miller had thrown into a nearby pasture the .22 caliber target pistol with which he sprayed bullets into the family who gave him lodging. Joe Moreland, 37, Miller's brother - in - law, and Moreland’s baby daughter, Paula, about 2, were killed instantly in the outburst. which came for no apparMrs. Freda Moreland, 33, Miller’s sitter, was critically wounded with bullet wounds in the back and head. Her two sons, Jerry Wayne, 4, and Charles, 8, were hit in, the neck. .— . The younger boy is seriously injured, but the hospital reported that Charles is in satisfactory condition. The capture ended an all-night dragnet whiefi stretched all over Oklahoma and into neighboring states after Miller tried to slaughter the family. Officers said he burst out of a bedroom, pistol in hand, and fired shot after shot intq the helpless family. Jirry is one of 11 children. Several live with their father in Wynona. Jerry went to live with his sister after he was released from the Army at Ft. Sill, Okla., when rape charges were brought against him last year. The boy's father said he could give no reason for the shootings. ‘‘They took him into their family and treated him just like one of them,” the elder Miller said.
