Moore revealed today that Russian submarines and surface ships have been “snooping" along the Navy's Pacific barrier between Midway and the Aleutians. Moore commands the 1.5Q0-mile and radar planes extend the DEW * distant early warning) system to the mid-Pacific. The admiral said Navy radar constellations and destroyer pickets have made numerous contacts with Soviet naval units all along the Pacific barrier area. “Their surface ships," the admiral said, “have patrolled the length of our Pacific barrier, and we’ve spotted Red submarines snooping the area.” The Barbers Point based admiral said because of security reasons, it was impossible' to specify the times, locations or further identify the Soviet ships.. A spokesman for the 4,000-man naval command said continuous round the clock sea and air patrols ape now toeing run the entire length of the north Pacific u-here Japan sent its undetected task force to attack Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. High altitude winds of more than 150 miles an hour bring northwestern American and Canadian cities within four hours jet flying time of Russian airfields that dot the Kamchatka Peninsula. Heavy overcasts along the route have made this a built-in avenue to the Americas for any sneak attack launched by Russia. Admiral Moore told UPI he was certain the Russians were aware that the barrier planes and ships had now reached a fully operational stage.

U.S. Approach Differs From British View WASHINGTON (UPI) — The United States was reported wilfi ing today to dsicuss with Russia some sort of demilitarized zone in Centraf Europe if it is tied in with a general settlement of the problems of a divided Germany. American officials in making the report acknowledged that this approach differs with the reported British view. The British believe creation of such a zone separating Communist and Western forces would in itself, be worthwhile in easing European tensions — even if it were not related to specific progress on the German problem. To Reconcile Views Reconciling the divergent, Brit-ish-American views on “disengagement” is seen here as one o! the major tasks facing President Eisenhower and British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan in their week-end conferences al Camp David, Md. Macmillan and his party arrive here Thursday. Eisenhower and Macmillan appear to have reached general agreement — although for different reasons — on the need to hold a summer summit conference with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrush chev and Fre nc h President Charles de Gaulle. . —— —— ~ Macmillan is convinced, his aides report, that agreements with Russia to settle some of Europe's problems can be achieved only by direct talks with Khrushchev himself. Wants “Worthwhile Results" Eisenhower still hopes for some “worthwhile results" at a prioi foreign ministers’ meeting in midMay in Geneva. But the President has agreed to open the way to a summit meeting to show the good faith of the United States. The British approach the summit with positive hopes-for some progress. The United States, or the other hand, accepts the ne cessity for such. a meeting tc avoid open conflict over Berlin. Consider Status Os Greensburg Mayor GREENSBURG. Ind. <UPI>Greensbutg city officials conferred with state legal experts today on what steps to take in the wake of Mayor Sheldon Smith’s admission that he perpetrated a hoax coverup the loss of more than $7,000 in city funds. City attorney William Woodfil! went to Indianapolis to confer with fire representatives of the Indiana attorney general’s office, presumably on the procedure necessary to have the City Council elect one of its own members as acting mayor. The conference came about within hours after Smith repaid the fund shortage, confessed his story of a robbery and razor blade attack by thee men was a hoax, and entered a private hospital at - Smith, 42, a former state president of Indiana Young Republicans, was taken to the hospital late Tuesday. His family doctor accompanied him. The City Council met immediately with Woodfill but decided to wait a day or two before taking any action. Prosecutor Richard Garvey, to whom Smith told a story of fabricating the razor attack to cover up a loss in a “pigeon drop" confidence game, said in the light of Smith’s hospitalization that he would hold off any legal action in the case for “a few days to correlate what information I have." Garvey said Monday night that perjury charges might be filed against Smith. Authorities aslo said there was no evidence to support Smith's story of the confidence game. »
