Social Security Quiz Answers Many Queries
(Editor’s note: Do you have any questions about Social Security? We all do, don’t we? Send any question you might have to Social Security Quiz, c/o Daily Democrat. You’ll find your answer in this column, which is published each Saturday.) ; Q. 1 recently started receiving • disabiltiy insurance benefits of ' $108.50 per month. Now I understand my wife and two small boys can draw. How much will they get starting January, 1959, when the raise goes into effect? A. The wife and children of a worker receiving disability insurance benefits each receive onehalf what the worker receives. However, beginning with January 1959, there is an increase in monthly payments with a family maximum of $254 per month. You will get sll6, the wife and children $46 each—a total of $254 per month. Q. I'm planning early retirement. As a master machinist I’ve had maximum earnings ever since social security began. I will be 60
in January, 1959. How much difference would it make in my social security benefit if I retired with maximum earnings Januahj 31. 1959 or if I retired January 31, 1964 at age 65? A. It you retire in January 1959 with maximum wages, your old age insurance benefit would be slll.OO. If you continue work at the maximum until December, 1963, your old age insurance benefit would be $117.00. Q. I have just retired from the company where I have been employed for many years. I wish to apply for social security benefits, but find I have lost the card showing my social security number. Wifi this interfere with my applying for payments? A. No indeed. Bring some record of your correct number to your social security office right away. Your company will have a record of your number. Even if they don’t, your social security office could obtain the number for you from their main accounting office in Baltimore, but- it would take- a little longer. Q. I have frequently read that people apply for social security payments should bring proof of their recent earnings. Why is this? I thought trty employer sent in reports of what he paid me. A. While it is true that your employer sends in reports of your earnings every three months in most cases, it. requires a little time for the Internal Revenue Service to process these reports, and a little time for our accounting office in Baltimore to credit those earnings to your account. Therefore, there is a time lag of about 6 months from the time your employer reports, until your account is credited. If you are self-employ-ed, the time lag is longer because you only report self-employment income once a "year. Q. I am now 70 and I draw social security benefits. I’m working as * companion and practical nurse for S2O cash per week plus room and board which could cost me s2l if I weren’t living ih my employer’s home. This means I’m going to make over SI2OO this year. Do I have to give up my social security benefits.? A. No, as a domestic only cash wages count toward the SI2OO. The value of room and board does not count as wages or earnings in do-

Is there any way to speed up my claim for social security payments when I come in to make a claim next month? A. Yes, you can speed up the processing of your claim by bring* ing proof of your age with you. Frequently, proof of age is needed before your claim can be sent in for payment, and if you will obtain this proof now, it will save time later. Old documents such as birth certificates, marriage records, insurance policies, etc., can be used. So look around to see what you have. . - Decatur Question These are answers to questions asked by Daily Democrat readers: Q.
