East Chicago Top Favorite At Lafayette By CHARLES HONAKER United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPD — The only clear cut favorite and the No. 1 "people’s choice” are lumped into the northwest semi-state of Saturday’s Indiana high school basketball tourney at Purdue University. The favorite is tail and talented East Chicago Washington with a glittering 25-1 record and the No. 2 ranking in the ■ state. The sentimental choice is little Bainbridge, the unbeaten 26-game winner. East Chicago faces tourney-wise Lafayette in the opener. Logansport goes against Bainbridge in the second game. This East Chicago club probably has more balance and savvy than the one John Baratto piloted into

Lafayette's Bronchos aren’t up to their usual prowess—they needed the sectionals to bring their record above .500 —and check in with a 15-11 mark. Coach Marion Crawley has but an average club, a fine clutch shooter in 5--11 guard Dick Johnson arid a good pivotman in 64 ’ Bob Hainje. They’ve learned through the years never to underestimate a Crawley-coached team. Some of his crews have wrecked the title hopes of such classy crews of Gary Froebel, Gary Roosevelt, and South Bend Central in recent years. The Berries beat Kokomo during the season, for instance. : and have one o fthe best all-round "little” players in 5-10 Bill Cuppy. With the exception of Lafayette and Logansport of the North Central Conference, they’re strangers. But it’s a cinch they "covered” each other well in the regionals. Lafayette, a two-time state champ, has reached the finals 11 times, but not since 1957 when Crawley’s boys were beaten by unbeaten South Bend Central. Logansport hasn’t made it to the "state" since IM4 whtt it won its lone state crown, beating Indianapolis Tech in the title scrap, 26-19. Hockey Results National League Boston 5, New York 4.

Player Trade Talks Break Out In Camps By FRED DOWN , i United Press International ‘ Trade talk broke out in the big ! league training camps today whei ’ the Los Angeles Dodgers disclosed recent negotiations with the Milwaukee Braves and the Baltimore 1 Orioles revealed they want to dis--1 pose of pitcher Billy Loes. General Manager E. J. (Buzzie) s Bavasi of the Dodgers said he has • been approached by several ■ Braves’ officials who are search- . ing desperately for a replacement for second-baseman Red SchoenMienst. The Braves want either , Junior Gilliam or Don Zimmer but Bavasi says the price would be high if the Dodgers were to mflke a deal involving either. ‘‘l’m not going to make a deal just to help the Braves and if we give them a second - baseman we’re helping them,” said Bavasi. "I will make a deal, however, provided it’s one we can’t turn down. If we can get two players who will play for us every day or one daily player and a pitcher who can go every fourth day, We are willing to deal.” The Braves, who know Schoendienst won’t be available and suspect that Mel Roach, original No. 1 candidate for the job, won’t be either, now rate Chuck Cottier, a 23-year-old rookie on the Louisville roster, as their best prospect. Cottier has starred defensively in the Braves’ early exhibition games and has, collected five hits In 13 times at bat. The Boston Red Sox, meanwhile, continued their “perfect” conditioning program at Scottsdale, Ariz., by beating the San Francisco Giants, 7-4, for their fifth straight victory. A triple by BUI Renna, a double by Sammy White and a single by rookie Punnpsie Green featured a five-run Red Sox rally in the eighth inning. Willie Mays suffered a severe gash in his right shin in a collision at home plate during the game. The gash required 35 stitches to close and it was estimated he will be siddlined at least a week. The New York Yankees shaded the Orioles. 10-9, the-Cleveland Indians edged out the Chicago Cubs, 6-5, and the Cincinnati Reds best the Pittsburgh Pirates. 9-4, in other Grapefruit League action.
