The appointment of the new judges was made necessary by legislative action increasing court membership from six to eight. Smith, a Democrat, is a former LaPorte county judge and was assistant director of the Indiana legislature reference bureau. Ryan, a Republican, is a former Marion county superior court judge. Ryan is 38 and Smith 60. Smith was a member of the Indiana legislature representing LaPorte and Starke counties in the house in 1927 and 1931. He follows in the footsteps of his father, Ralph N. Smith, who was a member of the appellate court about 25 years ago. The pay of the Jiew judges is $17,400 a year. Under terms of a bill enacted by the 1959 Legislature, salaries will be $20,400 after next Jan. 1. Legislator Resigns To Be Postmaster a INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — Rep. J. Howard Hetzler (RrWabash) has resigned both his legislative post and his membership on the Indiana State Budget Committee in order to take a job as acting Wabash postmaster. Hetzler’s resignation was announced today by the office of Governor Handley. He has just completed serving in his third legislative session. A farmer and auction sale clerk, Hetzler also is a federal tax consultant. Four Drivers Fined On Traffic Charges Four motorists were fined in justice of the peace court Wednesday evening for recent traffic viola- > itions filed against them by the Indiana state police. Quentin Gwin, Jr., 34, Fort Wayne, arrested by the state po’lice March 4 on 13th street for paid a fine of $16.75 aft- ' er pleading guilty. He was charged with driving 48 miles per hour in a posted zone of 30 miles per hour. Wilbur L. Schwaller, 25, route one, Monroe, was arrested by the state police March 10 on U. S. 27 about 1% miles south of Decatur for improper passing. A fine of $16.75 was taxed for the vioation. Dewayne L. Aglet, 19, Decatur, was arrested by the state police February 25 on 13th street for driving 45 miles per hour. A fine of $16.75 was assessed for the speeding charge. Bernard N. dark, 32, 413 Mercer avenue, was arrested by the state police March 1 on 13th street for improper registration. He ap. peared in court last night to the charge and received a fine of $1.75 assessed for the bureau of motor vehicles, after the case was continued indefinitely. Pop Eyed BUFFALO, N.Y. No Polio Cases In Indiana This Year INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — The Indiana State Board of Health’s weekly morbidity report showed today that no polio cases have been reported in the state thus far in 1959. A year ago, no cases had been reported up to early March, although the five-year median for this time of year is seven cases.
