New Albany Is Favorite At Evansville By (HARLES HONAKER United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPD— They said the southern .semi-state in the Indiana high .school basketball tourney was “wide open" this year and nobody can deny that a line-up putting favored New Albany against Tell City and Brazil against giant-killer Oden isn't a king-sized surprise. New Albany’s Southern Conference champs were among more than half a dozen clubs singled out in pre-tourney speculation as a good possibility. So there, at least, the dope sheet came through. Coach Johnny Givens’ Bulldogs dropped three In a row before the Christmas holidays but only one game since then to roll into the Evansville semis with a 14-game winning streak and a fine 19-4 record. Tom Hutchinson and Embra Whitfield have been Gibens' most effective scorers during the tourney. Then, too, New Albany won at Tell City Jan. 16, by 40-35, in an SIAC game. Even During Season Tell City’s Marksmen, on the other hand, could do no better than break even during the season and check in with a 15-10 record. Coach Orlando (Gunner) Wyman,

in his first year, has brought along a club mainly on “determination and defense.” “Man for man, we’re not tod tough,” he explained, “but when we play together now and then we have been known to get the job done.” They did just that, derailing Evansville Bosse last Saturday in the Pocket City, 61-55. for their I first regional title. And although at a height advantage against New Albany, Tell City, shouldn't be scared. Fort Branch, which also knuckled under to the Marksmen last Saturday, had a front line measuring ,6-6, 6-4, 6-2. Wyman has three 6-1 shooters and rebounders who carry the load—Bill Lehmkuhler, Pete Easley and Don Huff. Brazil had a poor 7-13 regular season, lost its second game m the Wabash Valley tourney in January to then unbeaten Van Buren, but huffed and puffed to even its record at 13-13. The Red Devils of the Western Conference eßierged as surprise regional winner at Bloomington Saturday, beating “Valley” champ Bloomfield to gain the "Sweet 16” for the first tirrto since 1935. Jim Hannah, in his second year at Brazil, has a couple of polished performers in Tom Grayson and Tom Grissom, who romped for 147 points during the 1958 football season as a halfback. i Odon South “Cinderella” ! Odon has replaced Springs Valley as the “deep south's” Cinderella quintet, the only difference being .that Valley rolled into the state finals last year unbeaten. But Odon's 26-3 record is nothing to shrug off. The Bulldogs, from a school with less than 250 students, dumped three Southern Conference teams in succession to win sectional and regional honors for the first time in story-book fashion. Buddy Graham saved the day against Vincennes last Saturday, and little Dallas Myers came through with the game - winning bucket against Huntingburg at night. Coach Floyd Henson, a native of Paris, 111., has a well-balanced, though fairly small outfit that includes Norman Beasley. Benny Hanna and Buddy Meek. New Albany has made it to the 4-team state finals four times, but
not since 1955 when it lost to eventual state champ Indianapolis Attacks, 79-67. The Bulldogs have never made it to the title gamte and Brazil has never gained the “final four.” Annual Commodores Athletic Banquet Planned March 19 The annual banquet for the Decatur Commodores will be held at the Knights of Columbus hall Thursday evening, March 19, at 6:30 o’clock.
