18 Sectional Champs Seek Ist Regional By KUWT FREUDENTHAL United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPD— Eighteen of the 64 sectional champions renewing battle in round two of Indiana’s high school basketball tourney Saturday have never gained the “Sweet 16,*' but there will be mighty few brand-new regional winner.’. Perhaps the best chance of racking up a “first” belongs to Versailles, which grabbed its own sectional to advance to tiro Connersville regional. The “loaded Lions" have eight players back from the tourney team which lost to Vevay in the regionals last year. Versailles sailed through its first IS games during the regular season before being apended by Vevay in dbuble overtime Feb. 3, 64-62, thus robbing the ccwnstaters of a perfect campaign. Versailles takes on Brookville,, the first-round winner at Connersville la§t week, and one of them will chalk up a regional “first” since neither has ever won a single game in the second round of the four-week grind. Rushville is the tourney favorite at Connersville, bust must hurdle a good Aurora quintet before setting its sights on regional honors. “Prohibitive Underdogs” Only one brand - new regional winner turned up last year—undefeated Springs Valley at Huntingburg. The Blackhawks were ebminated last Saturday, setting the stage for the crowning of a new state tourney finalist from the, Evansville semi-state area Most of the other 17 “have nots” prhibitive underdogs. eludes the Evansville session, where host Bosse of the Pocket City is favored ever Newburgh and over the Tell City - Fort Branch winner. Bosse is former state champ but the other three teams have never gained the "Sweet 16.” Other “possibles" for first-time regional laurels include Bloomfield at Bloomington, Bainbridge at Covington and Shawswick at Jeffersonville. Bloomfield lost seven games during the season but grabbed the 2-week Wabash Valley tourney in January at Terre Haute. The Cardinals are pitted against Terre Haute Gerstmeyer, the favorite in the Bloomington session. Pointers Seek 35th Bainbridge is the lone unbeaten team in the running. The Pointers seek their 25th in a row at the expense of Rockville, then hope to get a crack at Crawfordsvile, the northwestern semi - state winner last year. Shawswick could be the most dangerous of the three, having lost only three times during the season and winner of the Bedford sectional. • The other teams looking for their first regional titles are oncebeaten Nahsville at Columbus, and Brighton at Fort Wayne, Odon at Huntingburg, Brownsburg Alexandria at Indianapolis, Fowler at Lafayette, Rensselaer and Wolcott at Logansport, Huntington Catholic and Dunkirk at Marion, and Hagerstown and Parker at Muncie. \ Biggest fireworks in Saturday's regional preliminaries are expect* ed at East Chicago and Muncie. At East Chicago, three erf the top 10 in the final United Press International coaches’ poll and strong Gary Roosevelt will battle to stay alive. Roosevelt goes against East Chicago Washington, high-scoring Valparaiso against Michigan City. Top-ranking Muncie Central and . New Castle, another “Big 10” member, tangle in the second game at Muncie.

Flu Bug Nay Be Big Factor In Regionals United. Press International A wave of flu which decimated classes in dozens of schools around Indiana forced some of them to close today for the rest of the week and threatened to weaken some teams seeking victory in the state prep basketball regionals Saturday. Thousands of pupils were dismissed for the rest of the week at Logansport, a city of about 25,000, when officials decided to close every public and parochial school. More than half the 1,287 high school students were absent Wednesday. ■ Sharpsville in Tipton County also closed its schools until Monday. ' ' ',-i The flu bug bit basketball players and coaches. Muncie Central's Bearcats, a top favorite to win the state title, wete short three starters and coach John Longfellow as 15 per cent of the 3,300 students at that high school stayed home Hl. The starters were Dave Ho&einz, DaVis and Bernie Anderson. ' - Logansport’s team, also hit by flu was in better shape today with all regulars bpek in action butt a couple of reserves still cut. .. At Bremen, 17-yea Y-old Marvin Leeper died erf an ailment diagnosed as influenza meningitis Tuesday. Flu was blamed earlier for the death of a California man stricken as he drove through Michigan City several days ago. At Kokomo, high school report cards were delayed for a week because of flu. Six-week tests were postponed because so many students were absent. However, public health experts said there was no indication “at this time” that the flu would become -sfivere to halt hardwood action. Officials pointed out that the ailment is mild and said basketball games are not an important factor in its rapid spread, which is “rather typical for this type of flu.” Dr. A.C. Offutt, State Board of Health chief, said his department had no desire to interfere with the tourneys. Whether the games are played, Offutt said, is "up to the coaches.” Flu also thinned the ranks of basketban Siquatls"gf Attica, East Chicago Washington, Hagerstown, New Castle and Kokomo. Schools were closed at Attica and Logansport, and absences soared at Fort Wayne, Valparaiso, Ftankfort, W«l'OlF ll '’Rfw**h er cities. Four-fifths <rf Attica’s starters were stricken, East Chicago Washington and New Castle were each short two regulars and Hagerstown, one. Officials at Kokomo were keeping their fingers crossed. Five of their first 12 players were hit by the flu, but none of them were starters. Kewanna and Markleville shut down their schools as well as well as three township schools in the Logansport area. Junior High Meet Here Next Sunday A four-team invitational junior high school tourney will be held at the D6catur Catholic school gym Sunday afternoon and evening. Teams enteted in the tourney are St. Joseph of Decatur, and Catholic junior high teams from Huntington, Wabash and Garrett. First round games will be played Sunday afternoon, with the consolation and final games Sunday night. 4 Pro Basketball Detroit 127, St. Louis 97. ■ Boston 120. Syracuse 114.
