Rookies Star In White Sox, ; Dodger Camps By TIM MORIARTY 1 United Preu International 1 John Callison of the Chicago » White Sox and Frank Howard of • the Los Angeles Dodgers—a pair of rooltie outfielders—are tearing i the cover off the ball in early . spring workouts. • Callison, only 19 years old, is being touted as the answer to i Manager Al Lopez’ long search for a home run slugger. A lefthanded hitter, Callison Surprised even Senor Al Tuesday when he stroked a 400-foot drive over th<j left-center field fence at the White Sox training camp. (‘He’s our No. 1-candidate for left field and I’m confident he can make it,” Lopez said after the workout. “John does everything well—he has good speed, hits hard and has<a strong arm.” In his first full season of pro ball last year, Callison hit 29 home runs with Indianapolis to lead the American Association. He was given a brief trial with, the White Sox at the end of the 1958 campaign, coUeeting 19 hits in 18 games. ■_ Most Improved Hitter Howard, like Callison, also specializes in the long- ball; The former Ohio State basketball star hit four out of the Dodgers’ park at Vero Beat*. Fla., Tuesday and was hailed by chief scout Al Campanis as "the most improved hitter in camp.” In 129 games with Green Bay last year, Howard, a right-handed hitter, batted .333, knocked in 119 runs and hit 37 homers. If he proves he can hit major league pitching, the Dodgers figure this 6-foot-7 slugger will be a natural for their left field “Chinese wall” in Los Angeles.

Jack Harshman, who broke into the majors when Howard and Callison were in grammar school, also stood out during Tuesday’s drills as he pitched four hitless innings during a Baltimore Oriole intra - squad game. Harshman faced the minimum number of 12 batters, striking out six. Make Impressive Debuts Bookies Lee Maye and Chuck Cotter made impressive debuts in a Milwaukee Braves’ camp game. Maye hit a 406-foot home run and Cottier, the newest candidate for Milwaukee’s wide - open second base job, turned in several sparkling plays. Roy Sievers, the Washington Senators’ all-time home run king, ended his holdout when he signed for a reported $36,000. Sievers, who hit 39 homers and drove in 108 runs last year, now ranks a; the highest-paid player in Wash ington history. Another American League slug ger, Bob Cerv of the Athletics indicated he was ready to sigt his contract when he flew to Flor ida to continue his negotiation. l with General Manager Parke Car roll. “You can’t negotiate by tele phone,” said Cerv, who previously insisted he would not show up a' camp until the A's met his de mands for a $35,000 contract. St. Louis Is Latest Bid To 1 • * . College Meet By JOHN GRIFFIN United Press International St. Louis University is the latest team to own a nice shiny post-season tournament berth in college basketball and two more quintets — Connecticut and either Dartmouth or Princeton — could join the happy throng tonight. St. Louis <l9-4) became the 10th team selected for the 12team National Invitation Basketball Tournament at New York’s Madison Square Garden, the announcement coming just as soon as the Billikens were eliminated in the Missouri Valley Conference race. Connecticut (15-6) can sew up the Yankee Conference championship (for the 11th time in the last 12 years) by beating Rhode Island tonight. That would earn the U-Conns a first-round NCAA tournament spot against a still-unselected “member at large” at New York next , Tuesday. But an upset by Rhode Island would leave Connecticut tied with Maine for the conference crown and create a question about which team would go to the tourney. Dartmouth, Princeton Tied Dartmouth (20-5) and Princeton (18-4) are tied for the Ivy League lead after swapping home-court victories. Each finishes its season tonight — Dartmouth at home against Brown, Princeton at Pennsylvania. A win by one and a loss for tire other means the league title and an NCAA tourney berth for the victor — versus West Virginia at New York next Tuesday. If they finish in a tie, however, a playoff is in order for the league crown. And an NCAA of-
Horse, Pony Club ' Will Meet Monday r The Adams county 4-H horse and pony club committee met recently, setting plans for the year’s projects. Beginning and advanced horsemanship will be given, as will a colt project. The club will j meet Monday in the library of the Adams Central school at 7:30 p.m. j Members of the committee, Edgar Gerber, Elizabeth Pedt,' Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Secaur, Oscar Ray, Mrs. Kenneth Worden, and Everett Singleton, invite any boy or girl interested in this type'of 4-H work to attend the next meeting. The youths can sign up at their local meetings as well. ficial said there’s a chance the playoff date would conflict with the NCAA tourney and thus deprive the Ivy League of a tourney representative. St. Louis, ranked 12th nationally, was ousted in the blazing Missouri Valley race by third-ranked Cincinnati and ninth-ranked Bradley. The Bills will be appearing in the NIT for the eighth time and will be trying to repeat their title triumph of 1948. Bradley To NIT Bradley is expected to get the 11th berth in the NIT, if the Braves also lose out in the Missouri Valley. And the 12th and last berth is expected to go to the runner-up team in the Skyline Conference. Xavier of Ohio, last year’s NIT champion which apparently won’t be asked to defend, narrowly defeated Miami of Ohio Tuesday night, 82-78. The Musketeers have an 11-13 record this season. In other games on Tuesday night’s slim program, NCAAbound Texas Christian added to its Southwest Conference laurels by trouncing Baylor, 81-63; NlTbound Providence routed Siena, 79-44; lowa State downed Kansas, 67-62; Texas beat Rice, 63-54; and dethroned Southwest Conference champion SMU beat Texas A&M, 70-66.
