Tournament Notes I By Dick Reidenbach and Bob Wall

The finals of the Adams Centra! - sectional saw the air filled with electricity. It short circuited both teams’ shooting percentages in the first quarter, but finally blew the fuse with 5:18 to play of the see- a ond quarter as Hartford’s Dailey a Bixler and Decatur's Jim Reiden- jj bach exchanged more than words v in a tussle over a rebound. I —oOo—- f Two other times during the s final game, it looked more like t the finals of the golden gloves t than a basketball game. Maybe d the officials should get double j pay—one for refereeing boxing i and one for basketball. f —oOo— h Decatur’s sensational tourney r high of .500 in the semi-final game *j with the Commodores was almost i emulated in the finals as the Jack- i ets hit 17 of 37 for a .478 mark. € The Gorillas took the low shooting c mark away from Berne (.260) j with a miserable .233, 11 of 47, in ( the same game. ii —oOo—- ( Big Bob Shraluka, who managed c to smile while tempers were boil- c ing late in the game, took tourney ? honors in the rebound department s for both individual and total < games. Shraluka, who many j thought played his best games of j the season, pulled 15 off the boards ] against the Commodores and 11 against the Gorillas to go with his 12 against the Greyhounds for 38. f Monmouth’s Ron Hoffman had ( held the single game high with 14. ( —oOo— Jacket Larry Daniels took total . scoring honors ,with 56 points as • Shraluka finished second with 44. j Commodore Don Baker was third with 43, but he only played in two games. His 21.5 average is tourney : high. Daniels and Shraluka played < in three games. —oOo— And it finally happened! At 7:56 of the third quarter in the fifth tourney game, Sheldon Dynes of Geneva fouled out. He was the only player to do, so holding this somewhat conspicuous distinction. Decatur Catholic’s Commodores came pretty close to upsetting the Jackets in semi- I finals with a neat .431 field percentage, but the Jackets .500 was too much for them. The Commodores hit 22 of 51. —o Oo— Commodore Tom Gross started , the semi - final game gearing glasses, hitting 10 points in the first half. But when the action un- < der the boards started getting a 1 little rough, he tossed them aside. < He hit only two free throws in the 1 remalner of the game. : With 52 seconds to go in the 1 Jacket - Commodore game the ' scoreboard went out and the game was finished with timers from each team sitting by the official timer to keep tabs on the time. OOOr— Hie Gorillas kept up a pretty hot pace in the semi-final match against Geneva, getting 24 of 52 for a ,461 mark. The Gorillas previously hit .474 against Berne in the tourney opener. Decatur's defense rates a word of praise in the final game as Big Fred Miller of Hartford did not get his first rebound until 1:13 remained in the.first half. He finished with only four. Hie tall fellow scored only three points, after get- 1 ting 15 in the afternoon game. 1 «■ -oOo**** ~ As toe crowd streamed onto 1 the floor to carry off Daniels, " they also picked' up Shraluka, but not for long. The difference in weight between Dan-

iels and Shraluka would make any ardent fan stop and think. ——oOo— The first aid station was busy during both the afternoon sessions and the evening nightcap. On hind in the afternoon to administer aid were: Mrs. Robert Johnson, Mrs. Henry Heiman, and Mrs. R. K. Parrish, RN. Black’s ambulance service stood by at the main door; but was not needed. Receiving treatment by volunteer workers during the afternoon session were: Jerry Gerber, bandaid); Michael Dean Mertz, receiving treatment for an injured right thumb which he got caught between the rest . room door and the casing; Ellen Kay Lindsay, (one aspirin); Ray Lengerich, (two aspirins); John Eichenbergei-, (two aspirins); Karen Sue Stultz, (one aspirin); Pat Girod, (two aspirins); Bonnie Hake and Leonida Mies (Decatur Catholic cheer leaders (one aspirin); Joyce Mosser, Cone aspirin); Carol Haggard (Adams Central cheer leader, fainted near the concession stand Saturday afternoon and was carried to the first aid station by two volunteer firemen, Gene Hurst and Martin Steiner. After she was revived, two aspirins were administered for her relief). —oOo— At the featured nightcap, several more were given treatment at the first aid station. Volunteer workers included: Gerald Durkin and Mrs. Arthur Shoaf. Dr. Harold Zwick was on hand if needed, and Yager’s ambulance service was located at the main gate. Persons receiving treatment were: Carol Brewster (two aspirins); Bonnie Dubach, (one aspirin); Mary Schultz (one aspirin; (Linda Reber (one aspirin); Charleon Feasel (one aspirin); Pat Johnson (one aspirin). —oOo— Larry “Bud” Anspaugh, local photographer, was present to take pre-game pictures of both the Hartford and Decatur quintets. “ Although forced to play against! one another, both sets of cheer leaders from the Decatur Catholic; high school and Decatur high school, clasped hands at the Center circle before the start of the after-, noon sescsion to wish both teams good luck. During the nightcap, we managed to find out wh?t had happened to the scoreboards dJrlhg the afternoon sessions. We were informed by one of Adams Central’s high school teachers, Richard Allspaw, (also the official timekeeper), that someone had thrown the wrong switch. The switch was located in the shop room at the school. Both scoreboards held up during the evening battle. —-oOo— ■ Helping Allspaw at the official bench was Tom Adler, another Adams Central school teacher. Adler was official scorekeeper. Brenda Sommer, an Adams Central high school student, played the National anthem prior to the nightcap foature. Four students had participated — in the national anthem at the other sessions. Holthouse Drug, which has been conducting a sectional tourney guessing contest for several years, reports 68 entrants picked every game correctly, with the winners i decided by the most accurate scores. Pauline Jones, 1002 Master Drive, Was declared the winner, and Mrs. Bob Shraluka, mother of the Yellow Jackets’ center, was second. Other winners, in order, were: George W. Auer, William H. Fisher, F. B. Hunter, and Jean Hoffman. —oOo— A total of 1,810 calls were received over our special wire service over the weekend by Adams county residents seeking the score of the 1959 sectional championship game and seeking any late developments which might have occurred Saturday and Sunday. The total calls were registered from Saturday noon until 8 o’clock this morning. During the first night of the sectional, 915 calls were recordedand 1,070 were received Thursday night.
