”T~* ———— Yankees Sign Whitey Ford To New Pact By TIM MORIARTY United Press International Now that they have finally corralled their best sniper — Whitey Ford — the New York Yankees today turned their attention to their big siege gun—Mickey Mantle. Ford, threatened earlier with a pay cut, was given a $3,000 raise when he signed his 1959 contract for an estimated $35,000 Sunday and immediately joined the world champions in a workout at their St. Petersburg, Fla., camp. The stubby southpaw had balked earlier at certain clauses in his new pact, one of which reportedly was aimed at governing his 'actions off the field. However, the Yankees insisted only that Ford make an honest effort this year to adhere to a strict diet, which is supposed, to prevent a recurrence of the arm miseries that have bothered him in the past. Alcoholic Beverages Out The diet, prescribed by doctors at the Mayo Clinic, prohibits theuse of protein meat or alcoholic beverages. Ford is permitted only 'broiled chicken, fish and lamb. “1 should finish the season at a rugged 130 pounds,” quipped Ford, who reported at 182. Despite assorted arm ailments. Ford has a nifty earned-run-ayer-age of 2.59 for seven seasons with the Yankees. He has won 105 games and lost only 40 (including a 14-7 mark-last year); giving him a winning percentage of .724—the highest career mark in baseball history. Mantle is due in camp Thursday , when the Yankees will launch fullscale drills. However, he has indicated he won't leave for Florida until he is offered a “fair” contract. “Once you show up in camp, you're dead,” declared Mickey, who received an~estimated $75,000 last year and wants at least a $5,000 raise. Kuenn Holds Out The Detroit Tigers also . were dealing with a potential holdout —Harvey Kuenn —who opened . a bargaining session with General Manager Rick Ferrel Sunday at Lakeland, Fla., but refused to come to terms. Kuenn, who led the Tigers with a .319 bating average last season, has been offered a raise. He thinks it isn’t big enough. At Bradenton. Fla., General Manager John McHale of the Mil-

Maybe we can open up the market a little.” Don Drysdale Impresses Don Drysdale, who recorded a disappointing 12-J3 record with the Los Angeles Dodgers last year, impressed onlookers as he pitched 15 minutes of batting practice without taking a deep breath. “Don had good stuff and also showed fine control,” Manager Walt Alston declared. Elsewhere along the training front: Hie St. Louis Cardinals devoted a two-hour workout to bunting, newly-acquired Don Hoak reported to the Pittsburgh Pirates camp a day ahead of schedule and worked out with his new mates, catcher Sammy White signed his contract with the Red Sox, and the San Francisco Giants announced pitcher Ramon Monzant will be placed on the voluntary retired list if he refuses to report. *. - - ' ■
