No Great Change In 1 General Marshall FT. BRAGG, N.C. (OPD—Army doctors reported today that “a i slight spread of pneumonia” has ; complicated the treatment of the 1 second stroke suffered by Gen. George C. Marshall. ’ However, Col. George M. Powell, chief ofjnedicine at Womack General Hospital here, said there ; has been “no great change” in Marshall’s condition. t “The extension of pneumonia treatment of the stroke to some extent, but , at present presents no problem,” said Powell. He said efforts to ; control the pneumonia have increased by giving more penicillin and adding chloramphenilcol. He said Marshall’s condition ■ “has not reached the critical stage.” He said that the 78-year-old soldier-statesman, who suffered a second stroke Tuesday, was restless until hbout 2 a. m. today, but rested comfortably after that. He said Marshall still has difficulty swallowing and is being fed intravenously. Doctors had held hopes that Marshall's condition was stabilizing. A medical bulletin late Wednesday said Marshall’s condition “seems to be stabilizing” but Col. George Powell said his prognosis was “guarded.” Powell, chief of medicine at the Army's new Womack General Hospital here, told newsmen, “I hope the general’s condition reverses itself instead of getting worse. If it stabilizes, chances of recovery are fairly good.” He noted, however, that the fact that Marshall already has suffered two strokes makes the chances of another one greater. Powell also reported that a “Very mild pneumonia’,’ had de- . veloped, practically concurrently with the second stroke which came sometime between tete Monday and early Wednesday, He stressed, however, that “right now the pneumonia is not” complicating the general’s illness. The Wednesday bulletins said that, as was the case with the first stroke last month; there was no paralysis but that Marshall was experiencing some difficulty in swallowing and in seeing in certain directions. ..i. te Handley Threatens Budget Bill Veto v INDIANAPOLIS (UPD—Governor Handley today advised Indiana legislators: in a news l confer* ence statement that he,will Veto the state biennial budget bills if they “jeopardize the state’s financial condition.” Handley called “absolutely unrealistic” a plan outlined in tile House Ways and Means “A” Committee to tack on more than 30 million dollars in stato school aid for higher teacher salaries. , Handley said Democrats were so exorcized because we had to raise taxes” in 1957 and “now they can’t wait to spend it all.” The governor said the budget his administration offered was $1,041,000,000 but that he didn’t object for legislators to spend up to 8 million dollars more than that if they limited their increases to faculty pay boosts at state universities and colleges, hiring of extra state policemen, flood control and an intermediate penal institution. But' he said more than 30 millions extra for schools “would sop up everything.” He' said he would veto the budget if his figures show that proposed spending would reduce the state surplus below 30 to 35 million dollars His budget experts believe the balance will be around 45 miHions if the budget they proposed is adopted. ■ On ether subjects, Handley said he is not upset because tile Legislature has passed only three minor bills —“the fewer they pass, the better off the.state is”—that he has not been thinking about “right to work” repeal and has not studied either the Democratic or Republican versions pf “union reform” legislation. 1 Handley once said he would veto a ‘ right to work” repeal bill. Recently. however, he has had no sjjecific comment although he hinted in a previous news conferthat he has. not; changed his mind about a veto. ■A' - y , J'l f • ' $200,000 Fire Loss At Brazil tile Mill BRAZIL, Ind.
