Lincoln's Distaste For Spending Cited WASHINGTON (UPD — President Eisenhower has cited Abraham Lincoln’s distaste for government spending in an apparent plea for his own balanced budget. Government records showed, however, that the federal debt rose from 90 million doUars to $2,677,929,00 while Lincoln was in the White House because of the heavy cost of the Civil War. He never balanced the budget. The President made the remarks in a brief tribute at a dinner celebrating Lincoln’s 150th birthday anniversary. The President saia u.at as Lincoln led the nation through the tragedy of CivU War he insisted that “the struggle of today is not altogether for today—it is for a vast future also.” Then he quoted Lincoln as saying: “The tendency to undue expansion is unquestionably the chief difficulty. How to do something, and still not do too much, is toe question ... I would not borrow money. I am against an overwhelming, crushing system. “Suppose, that at each session. Congress shall first determine how much money can, for that year, be spared for improvements; then apportion that sum to the most important objects.” The Lincoln statement was taken from a speech he made as a House member, June 20, 1848. Cabinet Os France Called Into Session PARIS (UPD — President Charles de Gaulle summoned the French cabinet into session today to discuss the Algerian problem and the new crisis in FranoTunisian relations. The cabinet was called to the presidential palace ostensibly to hear Premier Michel Debre report on his tour of rebellionwracked Algeria. Rightwing French settlers made plain their discontent with de Gaulle’s Algerian policies during Debre’s visit. But the crisis between France ; and its former protectorate of Tunisia was expected to be given priority by the nation's highest council. , Relations between France and Tunisia have dropped to their lowest point since the French bombing of a Tunisian border village a year ago. The French charged toe village of Sakiet-Sidi-Youssef was a staging point for Algerian rebel forces. On Tuesday, the Tunisian government charged that French mortars in Algeria shelled toe frontier village of Khanguet, killing one- villager and injuring several others. It followed up with a charge that the French government was operating widespread spy network in toe former protectorate and disclosed that 14 French nationals had been arrested on suspicion of espionage. Wednesday, it fired all French employes from toe postal-telephone-telegraph service. In reply, Paris indignantly protested toe suicide of a Frenchman palled last week oh espionage charges and claimed he "com-, mitted his desperate act" because of Tunisian police brutality. Airlines Workers Walk Out At Miami MIAMI (UPI) — An estimated 1.800 members of the Transport workers Union walked off their jobs at Pan American World Airways* big terminal here today in a local dispute. William Grogan, international TWU vice president, said the strike had nothing to do with a systemwide strike threat announced Wednesday over pay and working conditions. Pan American denounced the walkout as “illegal” because the union struck before the expiration of the March 2 3(kday “cooling off period” in the long contract dispute, Grgan said the walkout wfßs justified because the company violated the required status quo provision by hiring outside nonunion porters and food handlers to do work, formerly handled by TWU membei%.' A * The airline reported that stewards, stewardesses and pursers' refused to go on flights, but all planes left on schedule manned by supervisory personnel. PAA said it did not know if the walkout would force a shutdown of service to and from Miami. Officials said they planned to continue flights indefinitely. Credits Hypnosis For Stage Success CHICAGO The huhband I of veteran film queen Linda Dar- ] nel, who once appeared in “Forever Amber,” today credited Hypnosis for a successful performance in “Late Love.” “Hypnosis helped her relax,” ' husband Robby Robertson said of Miss Darnell’s submission to a physician - hypnotherapist who helped her learn her lines for the 1 stage play’s opening here. , i The actress’ trance memorize- i ,'tion sessions, arranged just 72 1 : hours before the play opened Tuesday night, included one per- i formance before Chicago Daily ; News science writer Arthur J. Snider. Arriving in town in an emotional turmoil, Snider wrote Wednesday; the screen star felt inadequate. Line learning for the movies involved separate, short sequences, he said. Physician To Rescue She telephoned their West Coast physician, Robertson.'* saW,' arranging for him to fly here and coach her through the chore, using hypnosis. Having gone through the role several times in his office under a hypnotic trance, Miss <4>arnell said she approached the footlights with confidence. “I’ve never felt so secure about ■ playing a role,” she said. “Hypnosis has helped me feel this part completely.” The film veteran of “No Way Out” listened hypnotically while the physician instructed her. "Tlie reader will read to you and you will remember all of the words on awakening,” he directed- “Everything will come back to you. The words will flash into J your mind on the -stage.” 1 Performance Is Flawless 5 Critics said the petite brunet’s ■ performance was flawless and natural. Not only was there no indication she’s learned the part under hypnosis, they said, but she even prompted a momentarily ■ flustered' co-worker. - “Linda’s been an actress for 20 r years and is completely proses- ■ sional,” her husband said, “but ; she’s been worried over personal : problems.” ; Her physician said there was } nothing mysterious about the pro- ‘ cedurg. ' “It is simply a fixation of at- ’ tention,” he said. Hypnosis mere- ' ly enables narrowing down one's . attention n so that you are only [ concentrating on the important matter at hand.” No Polio Cases In Indiana To Date INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) - The polio case total through last week remained at zero so far this year, i the Indiana State Board of Health said today.
