In Decatur, the St. Mary’s apparently reached the high point of 22.59 feet at 5:30 p.m. as weath* er observer Louis Landrum reported the riyer at 22.53 as of 7 a.m. Wednesday, despite .19 inch of rain and snow last night. The onset of cold weather has curbed the threat of more rains to worsen the already treacherous conditions. Monmouth, Adams Central and Pleasant Mills schools were closed because of high water. the highest total rainfall in the
state was reported at Bluffton where 3.85 inches fell. Further reports were that the Wabash was expected to crest there sometime this afternoon. It was 15 feet at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with a 16 foot level expected. Six township schools were closed in Wells county. At Portland, the Salamonie river is being studied by a corps of Army engineers With the possibility that the river may be widened to end the flood threat there.

Money for the flood prevention job would be allocated “soon,” according to Thomas D. Odom, the head of the four-man survey team. The Wabash river at Huntington > seeped into city wells when the river crested at 20.95 feet Tuesday, causing' Mayor Devon G. Blackburn to give orders to boil drinking and cooking water “until further notice.” Huntington reported 2.07 inches of rain which abetted the rising Wabash. Eight miles'east t of Huntington
on road No. 500, a steel bridge was washed away by ice and high water at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. A farmer who watched the incident reported it to authorities. All public schools in the Huntington area were closed by the city and state board of health until the water situation eases. Across the state line in Ohio, Van Wert and Elida declared a state of emergency as rivers flowed three feet deep through the cities closing U. S. 33, the main
J highway between Fort Wayne and . Columbus, O. In the Fort Wayne area, U. S. 24 had many patches of water in various places. In suburban ’ Waynedale, evacuations were on a • wholesale order as the St. Mary’s flooded this community. Mayor Robert Meyers declared that the J entire southeastern part ol the city ' was endangered unless the ice- ? clogged river subsided. i '
