LU. and Purdue Upset Monday

CHICAGO (UPD—Thanks to an upset-minded Illinois five, Michigan State today remained one full game ahead of its closest pursuer in the Big Ten basketball race. The Illini snapped a five-game losing streak to sidetrack Indiana’s title drive, 89-83, thwarting the Hooser's chance to move into a tie for the lead with the idle Spartans. It was a night for upsets. Lowly Wisconsin, bowed by nine straight defeats, roared back to beat Purdue, 91-86, for its first success against a league toe in seven starts. The Badgers remained in last place, but the loss dropped die Boilermakers into a four-way tie for fourth. The Illini owed their fourth win in nine league contests to a rally in the last seven minutes when Govonor Vaughn’s long jump shot put them in front, 68-67, for the first time. No Strategy Changes The outburst which brought the Illini from a 13-point disadvantage at halftime was as big a surprise to Coach Harry Combes as it was to the oddsmakers who made his team the underdog. “There were no changes in strategy.” Combes said after the game. Vaughn got hot and started hitting on jump shots and rebounds.” Combes, a loud foe off the zone defense, said he was “especially pleased” to see the Hoosiers' zone set-up crumble before the final Illini assault. *‘l didn't tell the boys a thing during the intermission. They just solved that zone defense and got hot, that’s all," Combes said. The Hoosiers' Branch McCracken said his team was “just outplayed in the second half.” Purdue Rallies FaU “Remember they are only sophomores, and they weren’t able to take the pressure of that second half,” he said. At Wisconsin, sophomore Jim Biggs and junior Rick Murray, w|io had scored only 39 points between thCm all season, spearheaded the Badger victory drive. Murray netted 27 points, and Biggs got 24. The Badgers shot at a blistering pace to build up a 23-point lead at halftime, but they were forced to fight off repeated Boilermaker rallies to stay in front. The Badgers get a chance to make it two in a row when they entertain lowa Saturday. In other games, Michigan State defends its lead against Michigan on the Spartan court, Indiana is at Minnesota, and Purdue goes to Northwestern for the afternoon TV game..
