Landis Given Payincrease By While Sox By MILTON RICHMAN United Press International Outfielder Jim Landis thought it was a mistake. Maybe the White Sox made some kind of cletloal error and had sent him the wrong contract. But no, there was his name—- " James H. Landis”—neatly typed, in the proper place. The 24-year-old outfielder took another look at the salary figure the club offered. Wow! It seemed almost too good to be true. Landis quickly got hold of a pen and signed the contract which called for an estimated 15,000 raise. Then he wrote a letter to Vice President Charles Comiskey. In the letter, he said the raise was so "substantial” that he simply couldn’t express his appreciation on paper. Brother, they just don’t write letters like that any more. And the White Sox were so proud of this one that they told the press about it. Key Player Landis was instrumental in help? ing the White Sox finish second last season after they, got off to a horrible start. Batting a sickly .184 in early June, Landis went on a batting spree that carried him to .300 by the middle of July. He finished with .277, driving in 64 runs and hitting 15 homers. Along with Landis, rookie pitcher Stover Mcllwain also agreed to terms with the White Sox. That makes it 25 down and 14 more to go for the club. Across town in Chicago, the Cubs were mighty proud, too, about becoming the first National League club to have all players signed. The Cubs accomplished the task Iby getting pitcher Dave Hillman to agree to terms. Hillman had a 4-8 record last year, but his 3.14 earned run average was the lowest among Cub starters. Tigers Sign Two Detroit reported half of its players signed with the receipt of contracts from catcher Lou Berberet and pitcher Herm Wehmeier. Berbefet was obtained from Boston in a December deal. Wehmeier, who had a 1-0 record with the Tigers last- season, reported his arm felt good again following an off-season operation. Kansas City signed four of its players and now has 20 under contract. The four who signed were outfielder Dick Williams and rookies Lou Klimchock- Ken Johnson Sfid -George Bnntet. - Watch Klimchock! He could develop Into one of the best second basemen in the American League. He batted .389 at Pocatello and had 25 homers. The left-handed hitting rookie played two games for the A’s in September and socked a home run in one ot them. Giants Sign Four The San Francisco Giants signed pitchers Curt Barclay and John Fitzgerald, infielder Ben Valenzuela and catcher Roger McCardell. Those four give the Giants a total of 29 they don’t have to wgrry about. Catcher Jim Hegan, second baseman Bobby Young and pitcher Don Erickson all signed with the Phillies. Who have satisfied a total of 24. while the Red Sox announced the signing of catcher Joe Theis and pitcher Arnold Earley, a pair of rookies who will go to spring training with the club. ... There was no word from either Mickey Mantle or Whitey Ford, but the Yankees did sign catchers Darrell Johnson and John Blanchard. So far, the world champs have signed only 10 players. Plan Pay Telecasts • 01 Gaines On Coast dr ■ ■ NEW YORK (UPD — Although faced with one major obstacle, officials of a subscription television firm aire going ahead with plans to introduce pay-as-you-see telecasts of major -league baseball games in California tills year. ' , Basil Estrich, vice president of Skiatron of America, Inc., revealed Thursday night that closed circuit telecasts of games played by the Los Angles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants will be inaugurated in those cities “sometime in July or August.” However, Walter O’Malley, president of the Dodgers, said we do not have a contract with any subscription (TV) company at this time," although he admitted the plan was “interesting.” “No company has spoken to us on this matter in the last six months,” O’Malley added. Estrich confirmed that Skiatron still must complete arrangements with O’Malley and the Dodgers before the telecast schedules ate announced, but he indicated his firm anticipated no trouble along these lines. “We already have an agreement with the Giants...in which ■ they will receive one-third of the gross receipts," said Estrich, who added that similar arrangements probably will be worked out with the Dodgers. Estrich also revealed that Skiatron hopes to add college football games to its year-round programs of sports and regular pay - TV shows in California later this year. Geo. Yardley Pul On Trading Block BOSTON (UPD—lnjured Detroit Piston star George Yardley, who claims he’s like the cast on his hand, “itching to play,” was >on the trading block today and at last four clubs were reported “interested.” Piston General Manager Nick Kerbawy, who left Detroit Thursday night with the expressed intention of seeking, a deal for the high-scoring former Stanford ace, was expected to talk today with officials of the Boston Celtics and Syracuse Nationals. Yardley, who last year topped an all-time National Basketball! Association record for individual scoring In a season with 2,001 points, would be a welcome addition to any team. His “market” value however, may have dropped in view of recent statements that he w’dUld probably play professional basketball only “this year and next.” Boston Celtic owner Walter Brown told United .Press international Thursday night that “naturally, we’d be interested in any deal involving Yardley.” Brown added, however, that he had not had a chance to talk with Coach Red Auerbach in connection with such a deal. He said Kerbawy had not contacted him as yet. Hie Nats, who play Detroit tonight while the St. Louis Hawks meet the Celts in an NBA doubleheader at the Garden, have also shown interest in Yardley as have the New York Knicks and Minneapolis Lakers.
