Italy Cabinet Resigns; Rift Os Politicians Coalition Cabinet Resigns, Brings On Political Crisis ROME (UPI)—Pro-Western Premier Amintore Fanfanl and his six-month-old coalition cabinet resigned today, precipitating a major political crisis that may take days and even weeks to heal. ' Fanfanl took the decision at a seven-minute cabinet meeting today after webks of pleading failed to end the split in his own Christian Democratic Party and in that of his coalition partner, the Social Democrats. President Giovanni G ron ch i asked Fanfani to remain on in a caretaker basis while he began setting up political appointments for Wednesday when Gronchi will try to select a new premier. The political rifts were so deep and the Christian Democrats so weakened in the last general elections that new elections may be necessary befor a stable govmmnt can be formed. considered resigning last month I but deferred because of a NATO meeting in Paris. He also postponed action, he said, to prepare and present the budget for the next fiscal year. Rut in view of the "lasting difficulties" in his way, he decided today to step out of the picture. Immediate speculation on a new premier centered on Christian Democrat Fernando Tambroni, 57, minister of interior in the outgoing cabinet. He held a cabinet post under the late Alcide de Gasperi, who kept Italy from going Communist in-1948. Another»possibility was Deputy Premier Antonio Segni, who will be 68 next month. Segni was premier in his own right from July 6, 1955, until May 18, 1957, but

I Tambroni was considered the strongest candidate. Walkouts Were Threatened The Fanfani decision was announced first by Finance Minister Luigi Pretl. The crisis was brought on by the resignation of a cabinet minister, threats by two others to walk out and rapidly shifting political positions on the part of others. Fanfani held emergency meetings with his cabinet today and Sunday but decided today not to try any longer to hold the government together. His coalition government has never enjoyed an absolute majority in parliament, and he has managed barely to squeak by in several important votes.
