Snow closed the Northern Indiana Toll Road and sealed off at least five U.S. highways in the hard-hit northern section oi the state. Factories closed in Indiana and Missouri as some city streets became virtually impassable. Drifts piled six to seven feet deep Chillicothe, Mo., and heavy snow still was falling at mid-morning, PoweY lines went down in St. Louis County, interrupting service to 40,000 persons in the St. Louis metropolitan area, including the entire suburb of Kirkwood. The Illinois Bell Telephone Co. reported 63 long-distance lines knocked out at Springfield, 66 at • Decatur and 59 at Champaign. The storm abated early today in the Oklahoma Panhandle and western Kansas but was still going strong in central and eastern Kansas. The cross-bow is being used to check on the behavior of the control rods if they were suddenly ejected from the reactor core. The antique weapon, borrowed from a researcher whose hobby is hunt* ing, hurled scaled-down rods at metal targets.
