Tourney Notes Congratulations are in order for the Hartford Gorillas for the victory Saturday night over the Adams Central Greyhounds to win the Adams county tourney crown for 1959. Good sportsmanship was shown by each team member and coach Thomas Agler, of Hartford, throughout the tourney games. •.• • * Extended congratulations go to coach Amzie Miller and ‘his Adams Central Greyhounds for their showing in t£ g championship game. Although several points behind in the final game, the Greyhounds showed determination and spirit during the entire game until the final buzzes. The runnerups did not receive a trophy, but will display, the tourney basketball to show for their vain efforts in attempting to win the tourney crown for their school. • « t * a ' Although the auditorium did not show a capacity crowd for the Saturday aftefnoon games, a near full gym was observed for the championship game* Tears were shed and shouts of joy could be heard, indicating the crowd was pleased or heartbroken (whichever the case may be), in the showing their favorite school gave ih the tourney games. « » • * Roger Snyder of Pleasant Mills, had been fighting the flu bug last week, Gerald Vizard, Pleasant Mills principal stated Saturday afternodh. It was reported that he had been forced to miss three days of school earlier in the week, but returned to school to complete with his team members for the tourney crown. * * • * Derryle Pharr, a senior at Hartford, and the recipient of the sportsmanship trophy, was the only team member of both clubs forced to leave the floor Saturday night in the championship game due to fouls. All five fouls were called on Pharr within the third quarter and the first half of the final stanza. • « » •» The Hartford five hit a better than average percentage from the field Saturday night, connecting on 20 of 34 attempts for a .588 per cent. The Adams Central Greyhounds hit a .348 per cent by dropping in 15 of 43 attempts. *•• • * The Red Cross first aid station said that only aspirins were given to relieve headaches during the afternoon battles, and evening game. Carol Haggard was given two aspirins Saturday afternoon, and John Marhenke, received aspirins Saturday night. The first aid volunteers for the evening were: Gerald Durkin, Mrs. Charles Schnepp, and Dr. Howard M. Luginbill, who replaced Dr. Gerald Kohne. The afternoon aides were Mrs. Harold Idlewine, Mrs. D. J. Guy, and R. N. Joan Keller. • * • * Zwick funeral home stood by at the front door for ambulance service if needed Saturday afternoon. Gillig & poan was on hand during the final game if emergencies might arrive. Fortunately, both services were not needed, however, headaches, two bruises, and one cut finger were treated at the first aid station during the seven tourney games. In the afternoon during the Hartford vs Berne game, Berne hit a .314 per cent on 17 of 53 attempts, while the Hartford club hit .422 per cent on 19 of 45 at-

Percentages in this game were Adams Central .464 per cent, on 33 connected on 71 attempts, while Pleasant Mills hit .450 per cent on 18 of 40 attempts. Before the championship game, the cheerleaders from Hartford and Adams Central combined their cheer squads to give all the boys a yell pf good luck from all of the visiting fans. All cheerleaders dio a fine job in directing their cheer blocs in yells while winning and also when trailing. * * * * Adams Central deserves the honors for their cheer bloc. All of the students were dressed in white shirts and ’blouses accented with red banners and grey and red beanies. • • • » Steve Riley, cf Pleasant Mills, is a new member of the Spartan •team. Riley, who weighs 268 pounds, failed to pass his physical during last Season, and joined the squad when Pleasant Mills played Ohio City a short time back. Four locations for soft drinks were provided for the fans by the Berne-French high school. Three spots were located in main lobby near the entrance, and one spot was made available on the stage. « • * ♦ Firemen watching all exits for smokers and other fire hazards did a fine job and earn a well earned thanks. The firemen were Gene Hurst, Wayne Hirschy, Leroy Hoagland, Weldon Nussbaum, Lee Parrish, Howard Habegger, and Martin Steiner. « ♦ * » Adams Central provided the music at the championship game. Don Gerig, band instructor, and his 50-member band, displayed fine selections and timing on the songs Chosen. • * * * Telephone calls at the Decatur z Daily Democrat-Citizens telephone company news service number, 3-2171, totaled 6,370 for the fourday period of the county tournament. Jim Bleeke, Decatur high school student, recorded the scores at the end of each period of play, and kept a running record of the games. Calls totalled 2,460 on Thursday night, 1,660 on Friday night, and 2.250 on Saturday and Sunday. The news service runs from 5 p.m. each evening until 8 a.m. It is not in operation during the day except on holidays, Saturdays and Sundays.
