Fitted Suits Back In Spring Styles Says Relaxed Look Is On Way Out •By GAY PAULEY UPI Women’s Editor * NEW YORK (UPD— The suit, basic in a woman’s wardrobe, gets down to the basics this spring. IL fits the figureu “The relaxed look is on its way out”, said designer Harry Frechtel. “This spring marks the beginning of the return to the fitted suit” Severaf other designers also are returning — each collection shown to visiting fashion editors this week included at least a couple of suits with slim skirt and jacket hugging the waistline and upper hip-bone. The shows are held semi-annually by the couture group of the New York Dress Institute. However, there is no return to the broad, padded shoulders that went with fitted suits of the 1930’s and early ’4o’s. Rounded, soft shoulders are the rule. Frechtel suits have perfectly smooth shoulders; he cuts sleeve and bodice of the jacket all in one pice. Bracelet Length Sleeves of suits in most collections are “bracelet length”, baring wrists for those women who like bangles. But Monte-Sano and Pruzan provides the breeziest sleeve of all; the firm bares arms in both coats and suits to above the elbow. Most of the new suits are sin-gle-breasted, but Ben Zuckerman showed some double-b reas te d jackets closed with enormous buttons in black or a smoky pearl shade. Fitted jackets are of two main types — one reaching three to four inches below the waist; the other stopping right at the waist. Some of the “relaxed” or looserfitting jackets do hug the figure in one spot — the hipbone. But leave the waistline undefined. Relaxed Category In the “relaxed” category, th# number one jacket is the cardigan type, usually collarless and worn casually unbuttoned. DavL dow shows a group in small Scottish checks worn with small, fringed stole around the neck. Skirts are cut pencil-slim in most collections, but a few designers toss in a few suits with pleated skirts — Ben Reig is one. Frechtel eases skirt fit with scattered gathers across the tummy. Watch also for bold colors to brighten the suit picture. Along with standard gray and navy,! there are flamingo and watermelon pink, lemon yellow and deep lilac.

Social Security Quiz Answers Many Queries
(Editor's note: Do you have any questions about Social Security? We all do, don’t we? Send any question you might have to Social Security Quiz, c/o Daily Democrat. You’ll find your answer in this column, which is puty Jished each Saturday.) 1. Q. My benefit as the widow of a deceased worker ended in February 1958 because I remarried. My present husband is receiving social security retirement benefits. When can I qualify for benefits as his wife? A. Under the 1958 amendments to the social security law, you may again be eligible for payments beginning with September 1958. You and your present husband should visit your local social security office about applying on your present husband’s record. 2. ft. I expect to apply for social security retirement benefits next month. I have my original discharge from World War I Army service. Will this serve as proof of my age? A. If your age is correctly recorded on your Army discharge, this document will serve as proof of your age for social security purposes. 3. Q. I earned the maximum in wages last year. When I go to the social security office to apply for my retirement benefits, do I have to have a copy of my Federal tax return even though I never worked as a self-employed person? A. No, You should, however, take along your copy of your W-2 form for last year. This is necessary since it is too soon for all of last year’s wages to have been recorded on your social security account. 4. Q. I am a household gardener and my employers deduct social security tax from my wages. My wife died several years ago, and if I should die, could my small children get benefits? A. As a household worker you earn social security credit if you are paid at least SSO a quarter for cash wages from one employer. If you should die insured under social security—that is, if you have earned enough credit, your children under 18 or your children of any age who were totally disabled ( since before reaching 18, would be eligible for benefits. Write the social security office and they will send you a free booklet explaining your rights. 5. Q. My husband will be 50 years old in February 1959 and will be eligible for disability insurance payments beginning with that month. We have two boys age 13 and 16. Will I and the children receive any payments as his dependents? A. Yes. You and the children may

be eligible for monthly benefits as the dependents of a disabled worker. Applications for your husband and the dependents may all be filed anytime after October 30, 1958. 6. Q. My husband is now receiving disability insurance benefits. I will be 62 in April 1959. When should I make application for wife's payments? A. You may apply anytime after December 31, 1958. 7. Q. My first husband died in 1953 but I did not qualify for widow’s payments from social security. I remarried in January 1957 and my present husband has been receiving payments for over 2 years. We were told we would have to be married a total of 3 years before I can get wife’s payments. Can I get payments now? I understand there has been a change in this requirement. A. No. Since you were not entitled to widow’s benefits in the month before you remarried, you cannot qualify until you have been married to your present husband 3 years. This change in the requirement applies only to persons who were entitled to widow’s, parents’ or children’s disability benefits in the month before remarriage. The following is the answer to a question submitted by a Daily Democrat render and forwarded to our office. Q. I am 79 years old and own my own farm which I am now renting on the crop share basis. When I applied for social security, the Social Security office personnel would not permit any grain, hay or other produce, which I had received as crop share for the rent of my farm to be included in my income for the-year. They said that my crop share, was not produced by me but was the interest on my investment. Now do I have to pay Social Security tax on my share of the crops? A. Before 1956, crop share rent was not income for social security credit. If you filed your claim before 1956, you should come in to the Social Security office to discuss your crop share-arrangement with us. Social Security tax must be paid on crop share rent which is income for Social Security. Social Security tax need not be paid on crop share income which is not income for Social Security. Q.. I would like to know if Social Security is taxable on gross or Federal after I am 65? A. Social Security payments are not taxable either for gross or federal tax.
