Says Smokers Have Fewer Sore Throats Statistics Likely !* To Start Arguments j By DELOS SMITH UPI Science Editor NEW YORK (UPI) — This is , a science version of the man-bites-dog story which traditionally - is supposed to excite much inter- . est. A statistical comparison of : cigaret smokers with non-smokers , has shown that the smokers had • sore throats less frequently. Scientist W. C. Boake of (Western Reserve University, Cleveland, ■ resorted to statistics to find out ; if smokers were more likely to cateh the common cold and other i respiratory infections causing coughing, sore throat, and hoarseness than non-smokers. Medical science generally believes smdhers are more susceptt- ! ble to respiratory infections but it has no hard evidence to back up tlje view, as Boake pointd out. His statistical results are disputa- , tious, therefore, and axe going to , start a lot'of ' Thiiyindicatdtf there is no difference in susceptibility between smokers and non-smokers. They showed also that whereas the smokers of the study were more likely to be coughers while infected, they were less likly to be either hoarse or to have sore throats. Says Results Puzzling None of this can be taken as evidence “that smoking affords protection against respiratory disease,” Boake warned. He granted that the results were puzzling and also there could be things wrong with the statistics. “If it is assumed that the symptoms occurring during a respiratory infection are a direct result of the infectious process itself—that is, caused by inflammation in the respiratory tract — it is difficult to understand why one symptom (cough) should be increased in frequency (in smokers) and two other symptoms, presumably manifestations of the same process, should be diminished,” he said. Boake got his statistics from Western Reserve’s famous continuing study of 59 well-heeled Cleveland families. The study began in 1948 tytd all illnesses and the general physical conditions, of these 118 parents and their children have been carefully followed in fine detail ever since. Studies Only Parents He studied only the parents, since their smoking (or non-smok-ing) ways were established and well documented in the statistics. He related this to the number of respiratory infections ,the 118 had had over a five-year period. After acknowledging the weaknesses of his statistical basis, (too few numbers and the possibility of “self selection,”) Boake had this to say, in reporting to the New England Journal of Medicine: “Nevertheless, this population has been under- continuous, . detailed observation and the incidence, distribution and nature of : respiratory infection -have varied very little over eight years. The pattern has been similar from | year to year. "It is therefore considered that if smoking had had a profound effect, either to increase or decrease it, a greater difference (between smokers and non-smok-ers) would have been found.” ' I Escaped Prisoner - Is Caught Sunday CORYDON, Ind. (UPI) — A prisoner in the Harrison County Jail was back behind bars today after enjoying a night of freedom. James Graham, 26, escaped Sat- ■ urday night and sought shelter in j a nearby barn. But the farmer,! James Fisher, notified authorities Sunday that someone had slept in his barn. Graham was picked up about an hour later. RETRIAL t'pntinued from page one On October 24, 1958, Rice presented his arguments to the court, and Judge Parrish made his decision last Friday. According to the official judgment in the case, the court saw and inspected the motion for the new trial made Jan. 18, 1957, and heard the arguments of counsel, the state represented by Severin H.
